project up in the air now


with the new regs and adrs it dosen,t matter what motor I use the pan with the body will need to be torsion tested because of the suspension mods .Continue or start over .:cry
Has anyone had a beetle torsion tested.

Damn - although not an automotive engineer, bajawes is an mechanical engineer and seems to know a fair bit about this sort of stuff....maybe U2U him as a starter in case you don't get any other leads.

I,ve channelled a 944 torsion beam 60mm higher the the centre removed to clear the gearbox and a L300double wishbone front end yuocan find pic in members ride under malcolm 56moneypit.I havn,t finished the pan yet.Richard at Vforce has given me some gussetting points ie door jams box up heater channels .All the mods I,m doing are to allow me to comply with ride height wheel size not loosing 30% of suspension travel .it has to pass 4000to 6000nm torsion test depending on motor size.

I'm sure all buggies over here in SA have to do the torsion test once shortened, not a major thing, dont get hung up on it!

I spoke to a second engineer before getting my buggy regoed after having a few hassles with my first engineer. He mentioned doing a torsion test, didn't seem like a real drama as long as you build the car to pass the test. Don't stop now, just work more closely with your certifying engineer and call him before you do anything important. I did this on my car and when it was ready for rego, he walked around it once, said "that's fine", did a brake test and wrote up the certificate.

Malcom I know a few guy up here that have gone down this road to make low-costs (Westfields), it's doable but a pain in the backside. I have often though to myself why not make a tube frame and just replace the pan, stick a Subi in with its existing box mid mount and you would have an awesome car. I guess if it were me I'd either find a more open minded engineer, rethink the pan and perhaps tone it down, or go nuts an build a tube frame mid mount pan replacement. For my project I have decided to keep it simple on a number of items due to time/cost/complexity. All the best but don't give in :)

Dont be discouraged, I am sure someone here can point you in the right direction, or in the very least advise on the torsion test. Good luck and keep us updated.

Don,t get me wrong the engineer I,m using is very helpful he has to deal with changing rules and with all states aligning it makes it harder and out of 7 registered engineers in Vic he was the only one that would approve the mods and engines I,m looking at its hard when your looking at 800% hp increase:cool:.I was looking at mid engine but I need the back seat for the kids.I might just keep on going and if doesn,t pass I still got the orignal pan .

that's hot :) (mid mount frame) Me and my wife also have a child (five months old) but realistically there is no chance of either of them coming in my bug. It will be to loud, bumpy and hot. I see the car as a replacement for my motorbike as I get older and softer :) if you wife is anything like mine she will be hard to get away from her late model air-con whatever.

Anyway hope it all pans out, your bug should be awesome.

Suspension mods don't need torsion testing. Chassis mods do. What is it, in point-form summary, that you are doing?
