MEMBER RATING CRITERIA H E L P PLs

I really feel there is a need for ppl to be graded/rated other than by the nr of posts on here. This would avoid a few conflicts I am sure.
ie some here are 15 yrs young
no licence (i think)lol...
no car maybe....
no experience maybe....???.

then no thought or
no manners!!.... is, also NOT just restricted to the young ones.

I am only (ha ha ) 59 and feel bloomin young and do ask stoopid questions at times......but that's how we learn hey!! Then I also do typos sos about that too.

so, does anyone feel we could improve the setup or have suggestions..(maybe its still evolving as the vw philosophy goes?)

ie the pecking order we have now is confusing if not misleading to some if they take note of the nr of boxes (used to be stars) in the avatar section.
Also, according to the 'Good Book' the Elder comes b4 Bishop btw!!
be helpful and constructively positive here pls...
cheers
and drive carefully!

no easy answer, I would hate it to turn into a discrimination issue

but, when I was a new member & desperate for info, I assumed Wolfsburg Wizard, mean't that I was accessing top notch technical or historical advice, it olnly took a few weeks to figure out, & then remembered I should not assume anything, & over the years a few people freaked out at being termed learner dubber as they had owned VW for years before finding this forum & joining

Who gives a toss how many stars or boxes you have. It doesn't take long to figure out who knows what they're talking about and who doesn't.

It's a forum for discussion. Some people are into the technical side and others are into the social side, others both. As far as I know your ranking doesn't make any difference, except for a custom title.

I wouldn't care if there were no tiltles and no post counts, perhaps this would eliminate assumptions as to peoples knowledge about VWs.

there would still be assumptions purple

chit chat is for social if you want rules (purists do)
but mate, would you want advice from 6,372 ppl on here?? (membership approx at time of typin man)
that would be social disaster chaos and bizarre waste of time for the techno heads hey?, he he

Short of making every body take a test about their knowledge of dubs and then listing their results instead of the number of posts, i don't see what you could do.

You are right, there would be assumptions and there always will be. At least they won't be based on something as meaningless as how many posts you have. After all, a large number of posts could just mean you have more spare time to spend on the computer. There are plenty of members who have managed to log thousands of posts in a couple of months, but actually know bugger all. That's fine, it makes for interesting reading.

If you post a technical question, you will get a number of answers. How do you know who's right? I don't know. How do you know if a mechanic is giving you correct information. At least here, people have no vested interest in misinforming you.

If I posted a question, I would be happy if even 5% of member responded. I also think that alot of the social members don't even bother reading the tech threads.

Social disaster and chaos without post counts?

cool

maybe a warning should go out to new and gullible

dubbers / members regarding the unorthodox (wanting for a better word) -ratin setup on AVD
btw:

rating you on spelling, typing and grammar
and colour choice (name - alias) i have to give you 10 out of 10
oh,
that should be a 12 out of ten as u live in Melbourne and have filled in your location AND suffer from 50% of overcast days per year!!! lol.

What a wonderful idea. Might want to link this to the ATO so you can determinre the disposable income of the person responding to your item or topic for discussion. Maybe we could put up photos of people to see how ugly they really are.
Sorry I thought this was a Forum.

what about having technical moderators to sift out "trivial poo" that is offered as tech advice sometimes? There are a few google mechanics on here who offer all sorts of tripe. :blah

While I can understand where you are coming from Karmen, it is an open forum and 99.9% of the responses to anything on here appear to be in good faith. And if someone responds with anything that is incorrect or misleading they seem to be set straight fairly quickly.

Net forums are no different to walking into a pub. You choose who you want to talk to, you choose who you listen to; you could end up in a fight, or end up in some chick's bed...

karmen...

settle petal.

How on earth would anyone think that u can rate ppl in this sort of forum??

I know if i was asked to sit a test based on my knowledge..i'd soon leave. For me AVD is a good place to get some advice..help others chasing it (by grabbing threads that may have discussed it all already) ...and socialise.

And alot of ppl who are here for social tend to keep away from the tech sections....I know for me, it mostly because i think my advice is unwelcome. Even though I may have read every page and every thread that has been here since the forum started. For the first month I joined, reading was all I did.

If its based on how many vw's u own...crazy....i've had four...and am thinking of buying another two...but that certainly won't make me an expert. Hell, I only found out the other month how to tune the car accurately.

And alot of ppl may not feel the desire to reveal how many they have. Some ppl aren't show off types. They simply say...'This is what I know. Take it, leave, or research it some more' AND a few of those are ppl I like to hear from, because they DO know what they are talking about.

If u base this system on who/what u know....it becomes very big brother...and unnecessarily so.

Most smart ppl will look around, see who is doing what..ask the questions, take the answer on board...and research a little more still.

cheers
donna

so far what we all are saying is: we do not like or need the rating sytem of nr of boxes (stars previously) as it is just as misleading as if i mentioned all my cars and projects .
it is all sugarcoated jargon on our pc screens of no true face value there.

I am settled btw Donna and isolation in the bush enjoys a good forum. ha ha

kewl karmen...

im nto angry...just thinking...the mods have enuf of a hassel on their hands without a whole new way of ratings on their hands.

ppl really do work out pretty quickly as to who's on the balls about the tech side of things...and who's here for social.

alot of newcomers really do just sit and wait a little while before they even begin to post. alot just read first. And once u read the pages in tech, u very very quickly learn whose knows what their talking about, because the same names coem up again and again...and their the ppl alot recommend.

Ie...paint "just ask helbus or dubcrazy'
tech ' try dasdubber'

it really does come out in the wash fairly quick

That's the spirit! Let's have a modern, Senator Coonan-ish-model where people can buy credibility points; it's just the free market asserting itself.
