george reynolds? what can you tell me.

i was wondering about george reynolds, i know he raced a hot vw in the early 60's (mentioned in peter noad's tuning volkswagens), raced vw's at bathurst, won bathurst in a cortina and marketed a camber compensator, but that is it.

is he still alive?
any idea what happened to his race beetle?
did he race in any of the round australia rallies?
did he market any other vw parts?
any idea when he marketed the camber compensator and how many were made?

thanks.
henry.

There is a bloke in Melbourne that has a car known as the Reynolds race car, not sure if there is any relation.

hes still around.

He lives about 30-40 min from Melbourne on a farm.
hes a life member of the VWCV which held a few Christmas break up parties on his farm.
I'm sure he still has a beetle tucked away in his shed and last time I was at his farm he also had a nice early 70's porsche

George Reynolds did compete in the later Ampol and Mobilgas trials from 1956. His best result was second in the 1957 Ampol in a VW with Lance Perkins. Jack Witter and Doug Stewart won that one.

However he did not compete in the Redex trials, which were earlier - 1953, 1954 and 1955 only.

There were no Volkswagens in the 1953 Redex, won by Ken Tubman in a Peugeot 203. There were only four VWs in the 1954 Redex, with only two finishing, in 12th place (Laurie Whitehead) and 95th place (Ralph Wilson). 'Gelignite' Jack Murray won the 1954 Redex in his 1948 Ford Mercury V8, the 'grey ghost'.

The 1955 was (eventually, after many protests and a CAMS court hearing) won by Melbourne journalist Laurie Whitehead in a Regent Motors VW. Eddie Perkins (Lance's brother and Larry's father) was second in another VW. Four other VWs finished (16 had started), in 15th, 30th, 31st and 32nd.

There's a detailed series on the Redex Trials (with vintage photos) currently being published in Zeitschrift (Club Veedub Sydney's magazine). The Aug issue out next week will feature the '54. The '55 will take about 4 issues to get through...

I found this ad for George Reynolds' old VW parts business, but it doesn't mention camber compensators.

Is anyone familiar with Mitcham in Victoria? Its postcode is 3132 so I guess its a suburb of Melbourne. What's at 6 Creek Rd now? Maybe a job for the new Google Street thing.

Hi Henry,

Yes, I scanned it from the January 1965 issue of Modern Motor (page 83). I always try to pick up old Aussie car mags of that vintage at swapmeets, if they turn up.

If anyone has a complete set of Modern Motor or Wheels from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, I'd like to borrow them!
