subaru 2.2 bug conversion


Hi, hoping somebody can help as i am really strugling. Ive just got my 2.2 subaru engine fitted in my 1968 beetle. Ive chopped my own wiring loom out of the subaru and its all wired up. Ive ran petrol feed and return lines from the tank through the original subaru fuel filter to the engine and then ive put the return into the side of the Beetle fuel tank. Im using a porsche injection fuel pump. Im not using the evap cannister and just disregarded it. I havent yet done anything with the breather pipes or the air flow meter ( the air flow meter is just connected to the plug and thrown loose in the car).
The engine starts as soon as you turn the key but will only run for about 5 seconds and then dies as though it isnt getting the required fuel. Ive also noticed that if i just turn the ignition on the fuel pump runs and then stops and something clicks on the engine then the fuel pump starts again but it never stops this cycle, and i assume it should when it reaches the required fuel pressure. Can anybody spot anything that i have missed or done wrong? Should i be able to get it to run as it is without evrything connected? Where do you run all the breather pipes to? Please realise i am a novice and i am trying to do as much on my own as i can. Any help will be really appreciated!!

Two things spring to mind:

1/ You got an immobiliser fitted to that loom? That sounds like the problem I had. However mine didn't cycle like yours does *scratches head* Mine runs then stops until the engine runs. (Mine's a 97-98 EJ20 NA BTW)
The transponder chip needs to sit in the coil as it would on the Scooby. Mine's temporally taped onto a screwdriver and sits in a bit of foam pipe lagging to stop it rattling around. Once the engine is running it can be removed.
My symptoms were: turn on, pump runs..start, fine for approx 3 secs... die, no cough cough splutter - just died

2/ Not having the MAF fitted means the ECU isn't seeing intake air flowing through the throttle body. No air - no fuel.

Breather pipes to charcoal can won't matter for the time being.
Have you got the crankcase/head/IAC pipes all fitted.

Hi, it hasnt got an immobiliser fitted. The loom is out of a 1990 car so i dont think it has a transponder. Ive got the MAF pluged in but it is just behind the back seat area, does thiis matter?. Mine also just dies, no coughing, spluttering. I havent got the crankcase/ head pipes fitted as i havent sorted where i am putting my air filter assembly. Do they matter for running?

it's definitely a fuel delivery problem. are the fuel lines kinked or something? what's switching the pump, the factory relay?

btw, where are you?

Yeah, you mention the air flow meter has the wire plugged to it, but is it actually connected to the intake manifold so it will have air flowing through it like an air flow meter should?

ECU thinks:

Ummm I need air, fuel and a spark for an explosion to occur...

I have fuel
I can make a spark
Now where's the air - I can't 'see' any...
Ummm, I'll shut down

Fault No 2 in my first post ;)
You could poss bodge up a bit of pipe just to fire it up for the time being - perhaps a bit of air con ducting or dryer duct...

I am with the above...you need to have maf fitted..also things like temp sensors as car tune is temp related. The reason it runs for a few seconds would be the crank map, ot then requires air flow as previously mentioned....good luck.

Hi, ive drilled a 4" hole in my firewall to enable the pipe to come of it and connect on to the MAF. Its definitely better as it will now run when you rev it but it will not tick over. I assume that if i get all the vent pipes fitted it might cure it. Just a couple more questions, the fuel pump still surges on and off every couple of seconds as i described in the original post, is that normal? And any ideas how to run all the breather pipes to make a neat job? The intake manifold is nearly touching my firewall so ive put the hole in there and i was going tun the pipe behind the firewall and then back through the firewall in the righthand corner ( as you look at the engine). Any better ideas that anyone has done?

Whoohoo, almost there :D

Have you connected the IAC air intake pipe?
It goes between the MAF and throttle body to the IAC.

The IAC is the Idle Air Control, its air is also measured by the MAF. The head & crank breathers don't matter for the mo.

Have a look on Hellbus' post, he has a nice photo on there of the ducting from the MAF to TB.

I don't think your engineer is gunna like holes cut into the passenger compartment...
And as mentioned, you'll need the IAC plumbed to allow it to idle

There is no mention of a swirl pot here either..... Just thought I'd throw that in.... But it sounds like you are getting there... Where are you Nathan?... Have you done any enquiries into the legalities of your conversion.... Cutting holes in firewalls is not a good thing... You need to close off those areas from the cabin.... And you will still need to figure out how your going to get air to your intake... Taking it from the cabin is not the best option....

Neggy,

While looking for info on another problem I came across this thread. I noticed no one has answered you about the fuel pump.

The fuel pump will cycle on and off repeatly if;

1. you have the green diagnostic connectors joined.

2. you have C10 on the ECU connector to IGN instead of START. So the ECU thinks that you are cranking the engine as soon as the key goes to the IGN position even though you are not nor is the engine running. If you check the ECU memory you'll usually find an error 12 to go along with this common wiring mistake.

cause there not supposed to be , only when reading the computer or clearing it thats is why it would be cycling
