1974 pop top ques

hi all just picked up a 1974 pop top camper for a cartoon of beer!! only prob is engine is had it, cracked heads, conrod bearings gooone and main journal bearings.
My question to all of you way more knowledgeable than myself. what sort of gearbox do you use with the EJ22 conversion (got one of these engines for $500).
When i am looking for parts what is the actual name of this model?? cause the side, middle windows are not orginalls and i want to change them back.
Thanks for any help i can get

Can use any kombi box, but would be best to use the 2L unit. For a good working gearbox of this type you would be looking at around $400-$600, their id code starts with 091 (from memory)....

You would refer to your bus as a 1974 baywindow poptop when seeking parts.

As Edward said, you're best going with the 2L box, which has a model number 091...

If your bus is a '74 and has all the original bits and bobs then the gearbox fitted to it would be an 002, which has lower (IMO annoyingly low.. especially 1st) gearing than the 091.

The 091 gearbox was used in 2L Kombi's (most Kombis after 1975 were 2L as opposed to 1600) from 1976 to 1979 (maybe also early aircooled Caravelles but not 100% sure on that one)

I imagine using an EJ with an 002 gearbox would leave you particularly thin of wallet...

Cheers!

well I'm hoping that i can get the gearbox cheap through a friend. I got the engine for $500 buck and the car for a cartoon so i'm thinking with gearbox and adaptor i am going to try and get it going and on the road for under $2500.
The interior is really good
Does anyone have any names of people that i could get window seals from, at the moment I'm in need of the back one cause i've had to take it out and fix the rust
Cheers

Get in touch with Roy from The Bus Stop... check out the website http://www.thebusstop.com.au  or get in touch with him on the Kombi Club forum, http://www.kombiclub.com

He can hook you up with almost any Kombi bits from seals to entire body panels.

Cheers!
