Discussion 1835cc
Is it possible for an 1835 to produce 120+hp @ 6000rpm at the wheels.
This is the claim. Below is the listed modifications.
- Ported and Polished
- Mild Cam
- Lightened Flywheel
- Twin 40mm Webbers - Velocity Stacks - K&N Air Filters
I have chosen not to link to the example as I'm am more curious about the claim than actually discrediting the vehicles owner. I have been recently
reading about EJ81, 82 and the turbo mods for each and I think the claim for those 1.8l (modern) engines was 100 -110hp at the flywheel.
Please feel free to enlighten me and I extend my thanks in advance.

I'd like to see the dyno print out!!!.
I don't think it would be anywhere near 120 at the wheels, may be 70?

that blue bug on ebay has almost identical specs to my old 1835
his claims are abit over ambitious
claims that it leaves behind wrxs and skylines is abit of a joke
100hp at the wheels would be abit more beliveable
i;ve got the dvd of dieters superbug pulling away from twin turbo skylines and porsche 996s and it does it comfortbly but with a 2.7 type 4 with
46IDAs.....

yes that would be possible but not with a mild cam and would depend on a range of other mods aswell. i build all my engines to rev quite alot, my old
1835 used to do 13s all day long. its all about getting free horsepower out of an engine.

MAYBE he got a free wet nitrous system :p
any reason why this would be considered NOT possible?
1916's seem to be able to run them..and its only a few extra cc's

yeah Stan Pobjoy's old drag car used to do 12s
BUT I think that was with 'big' heads and mechanical injection in a lightened Oval. It certainly wasn't 'street'.
I'll stand corrected...

I believe this is possible, but not without the correct heads and manifolds.
In fact Michael Nash and then Mike Kristen both ran normally aspirated into the 11's@111mph with 1835cc in their drag cars.(light)
The key is good airflow and not killing air speed with a relatively small engine.
The flying flea ran a best or 12.38@106mph with 1915cc with mechanical injection.
Although it was not all that light.
Is that the car you were refering to Glen?

i guess most people think that if you just buy a high performance part and put it on you get what ever horse power comes out of that box. that is
true. but if you get that same part and modify it you get even more horse power out of it. i am building another engine at the moment and i have spent
5 and a half hours just modifying the crank, then 3 hours on the case as well as 5 hours on heads. no the other car wasnt streetable and nor did i say
it was. using race fuel would be also be very expensive to use on the street as well as illigle. i would also like to say thank you to the guys who
obviously know their VWs well....

how exactly do you get 'free hp' from spending 5hrs on a crankshaft. After balancing, magnafuxing and some mods to the oiling holes there is not
much to do, and these will not unleash huge free hp.
The question was what do to your 'engines', as in what parts and mods etc. You certainly are not going to do 13's all day long with a standard
1600tp with a few handed down secrets done to it.
As said above you must have big port heads and intake, large twin carbs, hot cam, larger headers etc etc. These parts are not 'free hp' and neither
is a decent crankshaft that is 'built to rev'.
I would think on an 1835 running 13's all day you would need a few more than 5 hrs on the heads too. Time spent in the case is really helping oil
flow and oil temps rather than gaining hp.
I am not arguing that 13's are not possible, of course they are and have been run numerous times. To pipe up and say you did it 'all day long',
with nothing to back it up aside from 'family secrects', does sound a little dubious!!
The thread is referring to a street motor making certain hp. None of the 1835's running 12's etc would be classed as a street engine I dont think...

crank i wont talk much about, and there wouldnt be many people at all who will build a 1600tp to do 13s i didnt imply that...... yes big port heads
and intake but not just out of the box and slapped on an engine. every peice of horsepower extra you can get out of an engine all adds up..... and no
its not referring to a street engine if you read carefully its if 120+hp can be made from an 1835. thats all. i could say all my mods and alot of
people will say i have exactly the same mods, apart from cam which is my own grind cam. its the mods you do to all the parts, the man hours that
really make a difference......

Yeah! Peter Richards owned it for a while (?) and it ended up a reg'd street car in Qld. You're right, it wasn't 'light', as it retained all
stock steel guards etc, just lost its back seat

from memory put a mild 1916 in it!
as for michael nash - anyone got pics of his car/motors just out of curiosity.....

That motor in Leon's add is Michaels 2700cc Auto craft, built buy Craig Brown from Crankshaft Engineering.
It was destined to go into Michael's 'Lummus' Pro-Stock VW but he has been missing in action.
The 1835 just looked like any VW engine with no tinware and had IDAs at first (petrol),
and then Hilborn 1 3/4" runners at its best(methanol fuel) when it was sold to Mike Kristen.
Mike K rebuilt the car extensively and it is now better known as "Cranky"
