Gearbox problems?
Hi
Just recently my bug has start to pop out of 4th gear when I accelerate. It doesn't happen in any other gears, just 4th.
I put a quick shift kit on it a while back, but it worked fine for months before this happened so I'm not sure if this would cause it.
Anyone had this problem ? What should I do?

main points of this are
* defective (worn out) sync teeth on the gear that's popping out (especially 4th) and defective teeth on the mating operating sleeve.
*the hockey stick (gear selector) inside the nose cone of the transmission is cracked or broken, or else the gearbox is just very worn (for example -
worn bearings allowing the shafts to move off line a little.)
"Could" be rear coupler, shift bushing and adjustment but if it was working for "months" then i doubt it.
If you have not changed these things then start here, but i would start looking for a good 2nd hand box - or a trip to Supa Cheap and get a good Occy

Take the quick shifter off the gearlever and see if it still does it...
You may have the shifter plate incorrectly placed...
[fingers crossed]
Problem is, gearboxes are getting so many miles up now,
parts will be worn...
with next gearbox, use an additive like Molybond etc..
to stop any further wear...
and maybe use a synthetic oil in the gearbox...

FYI a quick shift does exactly that.....so if you use one its a much faster change into the gears ,thats what a gearbox feels any way.....so some of
the possible causes for jumpimg top and the most common is a worn slider and hub and selector fork in the tranny..resting a hand on the gear lever
whilst in 4th is the quickest way to wear out this part ,split screen kombis are reknown for top gear jumping, another cause is due to pinion bearing
and mainshaft bearing wear..this allows a lot of slop in the gear train which affects the critical tolerences between selector fork and hub..eg not
going far enough in....any way not to put a downer on your problem my op is its more internal.....loosen the gearshift plate and select hard into 2nd
or 4th and tighten..this may be of some assistence here's hoping cheers steve
