kombi box in beetle?

why dont people run kombi boxs in bettles to take stronger motors? is it doable? regoable? i know you have to cut a bit out of the body and it pushes out the engine a tad is that the reason?

With road-sized rims and perforamcne intentions, you kinda end up with a three-speed gearbox because first is too short... different matter for big Baja wheels

EDIT: Or aftermarket ratios - as Dave mentions below!!

yes it's doable; there used to be (still are?) kits available to do it and like any other major driveline change will be subject to Engineers

I'm not aware of the engine being pushed out...?

You may need to provide clearance (cut a hole) in the body in rear seat area and uses shortened driveshafts. I believe Type 3 auto Left-side shafts are suitable without machining

This is an excellent conversion.
I coverted my drag car to a bus box at the end of '93 and it has opened a whole new area of drivetrain confidence.

I used to replace the Bug crownwheel and pinion EVERY meeting, now it just gets checked evey 100 runs.

An Albins 1&2 mainshaft can add strength and improve those ratios.
I used the stock 1800 3rd and 4th.
Stock height radial tyres may like to use the .82 1600 4th
with the 4.857 diff to keep revs down.

I started with an 1800 box so I could use Berg's BUS600 intermediate housing(2lt needs a spacer among other things)

Yes Auto type 3 left axles do the job just fine,
and the engine moves to the right about 1" if you centralize the drive flanges.

2lt ratio is 4.57 but Albins makes one that will fit the 1600 and 1800 boxes now.
