I could be wrong but I think that's Andrew Champness.
He used to bring his car to Adelaide to race in the late 90's to our VolksFestival's, when Adelaide International Raceway was pumping. Back then
the car ran a 1600 with a small turbo on it and drove to the events!
From memory I beleive he lives in Kaniva a country town in Victoria.
Years ago he worked for a short time at Keith Pooles Volksrepair in Adelaide. The same workshop that produced "The Frog". The Frog was an 11second
normally aspirated Beetle built up by Keith and Toby Smail. I think Toby is also a friend of Andrew's.
Hope this helps fill in some blanks?!

That's me!!! Dave O'conner is right, man I can't beleive you still remember my car after ten years! I don't get on the forum very often but
couldn't believe it when Dak Attack posted that picture. It's still the same faded grey paint-looks Ratlook now. It's '67 with early taillights
and decklid. Back then was 1600/std. cam/stock heads/T2 blowthrough with 34PICT. That motor ran a best of 15,5 on 1/4. I drove it to Syd. for Easter
Nats in '96, dragged it then drove back to Melb. and have dragged in Adelaide a couple of times. I was overseas for a while but got back 3 years ago
and a local drag club had started running 1/8 mile drags at Warracknabeal about 140km away. Have been dragging there for two years as well as recently
at Portland where the above photo was taken. Sold turbo setup ages ago and am just playing N/A for a while. Current motor is really just a junka-
cost me a gasket set and set of main bearings and some time. Used up parts i had.
8mm AD case on 3rd oversize, not full-flowed
Used 74mm 8 dowel welded stroker of unknown origin (brought back from Germany)
Stock rods
88mm Mahle B/P 30000 miles old, new rings
Old 113 dual ports which i ported to mini D ports, stock size valves
Unknown Hd single springs with WBX inners and retainers
Schleicher 324 degree cam (German measuring system is toally different. Its about an Engle 125 with a bit less lift)
40mm Dellortos
10.2:1 98 octain unleaded
Built a trans last year with a 1.44 3rd/std 4th (1/8th mile)
Trans is solid mounted these days but still gets driven a fair bit on the street. Motor pulls strong to 6800 which is where i shift at. Running 135
fronts and 6" second hand M & H slicks on steel wheels at track. Launching at 6000rpm. Driven to and from track but was trailered to Portland.
Best 1/8th time so far is 8.95 @ about 73mph so car is not really fast but has been fairly consistant and most importantly fun. Has not run on 1/4.
Cheers. |

Welcome aboard Andrew - great photo of the wheels up launch. Glad to see you're having fun with the current engine combo, ultimately that's what its
all about.
