Type 3 Popouts

Have a set off popouts with good glass, good latches and good rubbers as far as the actual rubber material is concerned. Wondering any one has pulled them apart and knows what the metal strip in the bottom part of the rubber is for? It seems to have 2 small lengths of thread and hex nuts which I assume may attach to the car body window surround??? Getting to the point, mine have rusted away partly and before pulling them apart wondering if these can be replaced with a little bit of work with stainless steel or aluminium strips?

Thanks, Andrew

How many sets of lights does it take a $229k Carrera S to learn? UPDATE: Cayman S, M3, B4 now added to the list.
