How narrow should I go?
Hi there,
Currently I own a '64 beetle and I am looking into slamming it down low. I was wondering if anyone could advise me on how narrow in the beam should I
go and whether anybody has had any problems in getting there ride through rego with 4" plus narrowed beam. I will also be fitting drop spindles.

4" with the spindles will be about right, as you will gain about an inch of track with the spindles.
Legally you can only alter the track by a certain amount, depending on state regs. Neither a narrowed beam or the spindles are legal without an
engineers report to certify them.... neither are front adjusters really.
I would register it then do the mods, but make sure who ever is doing the mods knows what they are doing as its some major components you are
modifying.
You will also run into problems running shock towers with a 4" beam.
Bugboy (Nathan) was working on a fairly narrow k&l beam with towers a while ago.... might be worth contacting him.

just narrow it 2" with adjusters and spindles. run 135 or 145 tyres and you shouldnt have any great issues. it will be on its nuts, it will look the
goods, you can drive it without getting hassled - if you start to go greater than or equal to 4" it not only becomes a bit of a fk around but you
will more than likely get hassled.

Keep it stock, do not modify any car at all ever under any circumstances and make sure it is always repaired or serviced by a dealer or authorised
factory workshop. 
Just my other opinion.

Thanks for the input fellas,
I've still got another 6 months rego on her and I can't hang out any longer for it to get done. I think you're probably right Nick, 2" narrowed
beam with drop spindles should be enough to get the look I want and will also keep the law off my back. Though the 4 inch beam is just so
tempting.....

Before you go wasting your hard earned money i suggest that you check out with the RTA the laws and rules pertaining to ride height.
Some of my friends have been booked
Also check out with a certified RTA engineer the correct specs required ...
Otherwise you will be paying the government ALL THE TIME

a 2 inch beam with cb spindles will not narrow the track much, maybe an inch if that. The spindles add track to each side.
If you want a narrow look, you will have to go narrower than 2 with those spindles.
If you are concerned with legality, check the rules first.
The drop spindles, a cop MAY pick it, 2" narrower track, I doubt it, but if you have to get it inspected i may pose a problem
If you are able to do the work yourself, not an issue, but you have to play the raise the car, get the unroadworthy off, then lower it again game... I
got good at it in my xb, but eventually started to get bigger fines, and eventually had to get it towed because the cop got annoyed at my desire to
have a slammed car...
I know others that have done thousands of km's with narrowed beam and spindles and never been hassled. Depends where you frequent, and how you drive!

Here's a pic of Hoodwinks car with my wheel and tyre combo and one of my 4" narrowed beams and drop spindles....
Check with your local RTA for legalities and find yourself a good engineer (RTA will have a registered op who can help there)....
If you need any help on the beam front or sourcing any of the parts, drop me a line.... I have them all in stock....

Oh and I forgot to mention.... This beam was built so it could be set back to stock height is necessary.... If you want it lower, I can do that to,
but you can't get stock height back!
