Advice needed on buying a Mk1 Golf - Diesel
Gday dubbers,,
Been a while since I've posted (I've been without a VW, felt ashamed), anyway that may change as I may have found my next project, but I'm in need
of some input / advice from the AVD fraternity,,,,,,
Its only a cheap, Mk1 (pre 1980), GLD (diesel), needs work on brakes, engine has had some work done, dont know much else yet (yet to check it out).
Any advice on what to look for, known rust areas? Tips? Telltale signs?
Looking to restore it to near spec and use as a daily driver,,

I had a 1977 petrol golf for a few years.
They often rust in the rear hatch beneath the rear window.
Check carefully the rubber boots on the drive shafts. If they are broken, dirt gets in and you are likely to need expensive CV repairs (a few hundred
$ each side)
Turn the steering full lock and drive around slowly each direction and listen for clicking sounds. If so -you have CV problems
Most have cracked dashboards, as they never coped with the heat in Australia.

keep an eye out for leaking fuel pumps, as the change to low sulphur diesel in the last few years make the seals leak.
mine was a fantastic car, 640kms around town on 36 litres.

Had a look at it, was up in a farm under a tree
Engine was fine, no probs, fuel pump ok etc, started well from cold, no blowby issues,, butt
too much rust, I'm guessing sitting under a tree for a few years took its toll,, could be worth getting if I can find a shell,,
