T2 Autobox


Does anyone know of websites that give some information on the Type 2 Automatic box?

I'm looking for dimensions, internals, maybe a exploded diagram and ratios if possible.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Want to consider a strong auto with good ratios for offroading and beach work in the dunes. Initially to go into a Baja and later into a Buggy. Looking specifically at the type II and staying away from the semi autos.

I know nothing about them (being a psuedo expert myself) and want to learn more. What can people tell me so I can make an informed decision about the best choice. I didn't know there where two to choose from. I know you can still get parts for the later model (010) but not sure about the earlier. Didn't ask cause I didn't know there was one.

Any advice or links would be appreciated.

The 003 T2 is a Borg-Warner design it is bacically the same transmission as in the type 3 and 411/412. The type 2 version has a cast steel diff/bellhousing which differs from the type 3 which has a cast steel carrier in a alloy diff/bellhousing. Talk to nbturbo about rebuilds he has had one done with some beef up modifications, any good shop should be able to recondition one. mr930 had a type 3 oo3 in a manx and somebody in the manx club in brisbane also has one in a manx. I would use the type 3 auto to avoid custom axles unless you use custom traling arms. I have lots more info on the 003 but not on the 010

Thanks Mackay Manx for the info and advice. This is the stuff I'm looking at reading and finding out more about. Good and bad combinations. People who have been there done that. Yes I have been for a short ride in MR930's goldfleck auto manx when id had it. I loved the feel and sound of the motor through the changes. I was bitten by the bug for an auto at that point and I think they would be pretty good offroad provided enough power was behind it to make up for the loss of the torque converter / belts. With modern engines in the picture or type 4 motors it is a nice though and costs nothing to dream.

Please feel free to post more on this topic or PM some peoples contact details I can call and talk to. I have seen on video an auto buggy (red from memory) in queensland that went very well in Fraser apparently. Would like to pick his brains.

whats better off road... and auto or a manual......lol. This is a question that has been around for years....:crazy:

I think auto....

the problems are:
1) cooling- the converter is air cooled (not good with sand mud and so on)
2) they weigh a ton (as VW54 said) I can just lift one, and you do need 2 people to more them around and weight is no good in a VW off roader.
3) Axles- left and right axles are different and you lose travel on the short axle.
4) size- a lot harder to fit into the horns

they are as strong as nails

Thanks guys this is a great start.

I'll be sure to book mark this thread. I will admit I'm dreaming at the moment but I do want to make it a reality, sooner than later.

Weight is an important factor no doubt. I like the fact that are quote, unquote "Strong as nails". I like this and thought it might actually be the quantary. What happens if they get too hot? Sieze? Temporary fail or does something break?

Thats Mackay and Moose. I'll be in touch cause I want to look around for the right one and get a start on collecting the bits I need.
