Engine noise - 1200
Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone else on this list has come across this before. It's a 1200 engine.
The engine starts up and runs great however if you back off the accelerator, whether just sitting there and reving the engine or even driving the car,
there is a "popping" kind of sound coming out of the rhs exhaust.
I've had the exhaust off and it still occurs so it can't be muffler related. It sounds internal.
Any suggestions on what it could be, would be appreciated.
Thanks
Paul

its sucking air from one of the flanges or where it bolts onto the head
your need to replace the gasket or try n tighten it up
get a bit of rag n stick it over the exhaust exit ( get a mate to do that ) then listen n feel under the car n around the exhaust joints for leaks
and tighten as necessary

Ok here's an update.
I had a friend block the end of the exhaust pipe with a rag, and I crawled underneath and the popping noise wasn't as loud, or as bad, but it still
made the popping noise when easing off on the accelerator.
When you take the rag off the end of the exhaust the noise was louder. The exhaust seems to exaggerate the loudness of the noise, but it's not cause
of the problem.
The engine starts up and idles perfecly, the car drives great, I can rev the engine to whatever rpm, and there is no engine noise. However as soon as
I ease off on the accelerator such as when going to change gears, or just standing still and revving the engine the easing off, that's when the noise
occurs. It actually sounds metallic, and sounds like it is coming from within the head/barrel area. I had a mechanic adjust the tappets and he
couldn't see the cause of the problem and he thinks the head will have to come of and start trying to locate the problem. The engine blows no smoke
and has plenty of power.
Do you still think it's an air leak somewhere?. I don't really want to start stripping the engine down, yet.
