Noisy lifters

Vehicle 92 T3 Syncro.

Cant seem too find out alot on the net on this subject, so here i am. (Still looking.)
Mechanics said when my syncro was finally started after approx 2 yrs of sitting" the lifters were a bit noisy".
Now i start my syncro every week 1x. Just cause i can; But last two starts lifter sounds like it is about to pump right out of the block.
I mean really loud and after about 2-5 minutes of idle and some high revs in between the noise is still there. Dont know how old the oil is but even then the noise is bloody loud and doesnt dissapear.

???Suggestions???

The lifters can take quite a while to bleed up. Every now and then one of mine gets noisy and will stay that way for the entire trip to work. Others I've seen can take up to an hour of driving to finally go quiet.

Hi

When I had a WBX in my Beetle one thing I learnt, never start the car and turn it off unless it has run for at least 10 mins. I.E. moving the car out to wash it etc. This bleed down is a consequence of having a flat motor layout.

I've owned a 1989 Syncro 2.1 since 1993 and it has always had 1 lifter that now and then bleeds down, usually after not running for 2-3 days or standing nose down for a while. It stops rattling sometimes after a minutes running and sometimes after 30 minutes driven at legal speed limits. It also sounds like it wants to punch a hole somewhere for the first minute or so. If oil change is due it can be more frequent, but it has always quietened? down and run ok.
A mechanic I used to know used to say, " take it down the highway and blow the cobwebs out" and that works too, but only do that after noise has stopped.

Cheers crew:tu:
Yes Syncropro sounds like it wants to split the lifter by way of jamming it throught the block. Exactly as you describe, i will dump oil and give it a good run on our dirt road, was a little stressed at the noise level sounds really tinny. Or a very loud click, click, click and so on at higher rpm it's scary.
I understand that a hydraulic lifter is almost foolproof just bloody scary as i have only just got it running.
I read somewhere that a non flowback?, oil filter is good for this purpose not sure on wording but it basically keeps pressure in lines instead of causing bleedout as 11can and 1303steve suggest.
Thanks all for the peace of mind.

one tappet isw not uncomen but 2 is trouble my mate murray had 3-4 tapping turned out expensive,:no:so drop the oil and run a good diesal oil for a week or 2 as it is a detergent oil and will clean up the guts of your engine than run 30 grade oil she should be ok if it is 1 tappet
good luck

Read an article online somewhere about running diesel oils as a detergent, can say that there were no obvious benefits but there was a known downside and that was that if it does clean out the sludge and crap turns out that all that sludge and crap can end up anywhere in the motor.
Sometimes a dangerous thing, but i will have to do something, other suggestion was to run a 50/50 of semi synthetic and mineral oil same action but i cant remember the good and the bad of this action.
A 30 grade oil as in single grade oil? or 15/30?
All I know is it is on right side looking from rear of car and shit it is bloody loud. If it were 2 or more wouldnt there be some kind of rythm to the claking?

Yeah that clacking can be frightening sometimes, and it just may go away with a good drive with fresh multigrade oil, but does cylinder sound as if it's misfiring? if so it might be advisable to do compression test to see if valve is stuck in guide? (after standing long time). Mechanics - Is that plausible?

Regular oil changes (3000km) with good oil and nice, long freeway/interstate trips can often help tappy lifters become unclogged, IF there is a problem of internal sludging. But it might take 10,000km.

I've heard (but not experienced) that sometimes, too, a thinner oil such as a 5W-XX can help because it pumps the lifter up quicker

OK no noticeable misfire apart from earlier drama which was a combo of injectors not being seated into block and me playing with the AFM or more so the box, I only cleaned the air filter and it was like it didnt want too fire and when it did ran like 2-3 cylinder. See post below

http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=66382

But in saying that i have started him recently and running fine, apart from lifter trying to punch through the block.
I am thinking of pulling the tapett off and turning it over to ease my mind, maybe even go as far as removing lifter rod and cleaning just to suss if any visible damage is apparent. Yes I know be careful dont want too bounce the actual hydraulic lifter. Twist and pull.

VW cool - only probably is syncro is still unregistered so no highway hauls for me or him. Yes I am opting for a thinner semi synthetic oil as u suggest 5/50 but havent found any locally yet.
