'74 L Beetle chassis number stampings.

Where is the chassis number supposed to be stamped on a '74 L beetle?

My '74 has what appears anyway to be a chassis number on a welded-on tag (like the one in the engine bay of AUstralian-built late bay Kombis) in the front luggage compartment, but doesnt seem to have one under the rear seat. Incidentally, the one in the trunk on a tag is different to the compliance plate and begins with 136?!!? I didn't think they made L bugs in 1976!?!?

Anyone know what's up with this Bug?

Schmo

The MAIN number is just behind the cover to the gear box connection plate under the back seat

It WILL have a number under the back seat.
I have NEVER seen a beetle without a number on the chasis under the back seat

Does it have a compliance plate in the front??

You should have an Australian plate, its usually welded on
it may be a body number??
plus the VW ident plate riveted on....

last 1303 beetles {L} would have been made in JULY 1975

beetles after 31st July are 1976 models...

the chassis number should still be under the rear seat in the centre,,,

1975 1303 Supers -
model chassis numbers 135 2000 001 - 135 2267 815

I just noticed Yours is a 1974 1303 model..

134 2000 001 - 134 2999 000 super chassis numbers
made between 1 august 1973 to 31st july 1974

the plate near the spare wheel well thats welded to the body is just the body number/goodies tag
similiar to this

http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/11/t3prodplzw2.jpg

the australian compliance plate is rivet onto the valance next to the hood catch
alot of clever panel beaters remove these when painting or fitting new front valances and so afew bugs around like my convertible are missing them
looking at ur bug id say its about a 11 or 12/74

the chassis number is stamped into the chassis just infront of the gearbox coupler panel
it can be hard to see if theres rust/dirt/paint over the top

its just noticiable amonst the rust on this floorpan

Thanks guys.... yeh the compliance plate is still there and says it's a '74. I'd say that the tsg I'm looking at is that there goodies tag as it is known. near the gearbox linkage plate is where i looked for the chassis number and couldnt find one, but that said, there is some kind of tar or glue or sound deadening muck under the seat so it may be just a matter ofripping all that up to uncover the chassis number underneath. :)

When it comes time to register, would the chassis number under the seat need to be visible or would the compliance plate be sufficient?

Cheers!

Sort of

You NEED the one under the back seat tomatch the papers.
They would LIKE to see the compliance plate - but not essential

If you dont have a compliance plate you may have to get a VIIU inspection or they just say its a VW and go away
(read here http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/rego_new.html  )

the latter is what happened to me when i re-registered my 75L

Thanks for teh linkylink Baz.

I'd say the chassis number is probably there but just buried under crap. Blew the gearbox in the kombi the other day so putting all me time into fixing it and doing some much needed bodywork while it's off the road so Beetle is on hold for a while... but will dig around unde the tarry shit and see if I can find what I'm looking for. :)

Hi Dave

They don't, the NSW RTA takes the chassis number as proof, half the alloy ones are gone anyway. If the alloy one doesn't match the chassis number the RTA would make a note of the car having had a chassis swap, its less complicated if your numbers don't match to "loose" the alloy plate. My new 1303 has a 72 chassis, it now becomes in the eyes of the RTA a 72 model. If I fitted 54 pan to 74 beetle, it becomes a 54 model car in the eyes of the RTA and the alloy plate would not match.

Steve
