problems


hey
on our notch back its a standard 1500 engine it goes alright downlow but once you give it a bit it just coughs and splutters away! we have replaced the plugs, condensor,coil,points, done all the timing right done the tappets checked compression it is good and strong: 150 ! there is plenty of fuel getting into carby so its not starving!
we can here this pinging sorta noise around the middle of the motor(a mechnic saying it is the little end bearings) but not sure
any ideas?

Yep, mechanics tend to have an ear for these things, provided they're VW mechanics. If not, check your ignition; a sick coil or cap can produce wierd faults, or your dizzy might be sticking (pull it out and operate the advaces by hand - if they feel gritty you might want to check the wreckers for a better one.)

When we bought our first notch we had a similar problem - seemed to go alright at first but then no power, could only get up to about 70km/h.
The leads were connected out of correct sequence. Changed them over and she went like a bought one.:D

That would be embarassing! :)

Take heart - some friends did just that on a rally car back in the early eghties - the day before a race, (fortunately, I was the smartass that stood back and said I thought it was wrong as flames shot out of the carb.)

little end brgs are not going to make the engine cough n splutter on mid range revs.... it will just be making a metallic noise, it wont stop it from running smooth

check your jets perhaps there blocked, is the fuel from front to rear flowing with no blockages.

look at the carby, dirty jets, wrong jets etc.have you changed the jetting since you swapped exhaust systems ?

i've heard of a typeIV with this exact problem, it was found to be a loose cam shaft gear.

checked the leeds swapped and changed them all tried different coils, put in a new fuel filter today.
i cleaned out the needle and seat bowl but thats about it!
is it worth getting the carby re-kitted?

we have decided to take the motor out and rebuild it replacing the bearings and rear main etc and fix the rust while where at it!

a blocked manifold or exhaust would make the eng run smooth but feel like choked - no power. Spluttering sounds electrical or mid to top fuel range circuits in carby. You posted that the compression tested OK and now you feel it needs a rebuild. Are you Just Hungry for the experience ?
I know fault finding a really weird problem drives you crazy (done many times) but unnecessary eng rebuilds can be pretty expensive. You should be able to see if the advance curve from dist is a problem by using Strobe Timing light - watch as revs increase for a smooth increase in advance. Re building the carby is something you can do now as you would probably want to have it done on new motor any way. It is still cheaper to get an experienced VW .. mechanic to tune up and fault find than to rebuild.
Is Sawtell near Coffs ? Stan ?
Hey but there may be other problems you havent mentioned... Hope you get to enjoy it soon.

Small end bearing rattle is just that - a Rattle usually at mid to high revs. Sometimes more on cornering. You can drive with this problem (if slight) for a fair time. Heavier oil may alleviate it somewhat. You can pull just the heads off to fix small end probs but always nice to fully rebuild, then you know cond of entire eng..

hey
yer where near stans but he is really busy at the moment so its hard for him to look at it!
the rattle is happening after your doing high revs and go back down to low revs thats when it rattles! we have done the timing with the strope light and its spot on!
we will take it to the mechnic again next week when he gets back from a holiday!
