humming noise from engine.... genny bearings?
started hearing a humming sort of bearing noise from my engine today. sounds to me like the genny bearings must be on their way out.
if thats the case what are the options?

Hi
Have careful feel around the fan blades, rags or leaves often get stuck in there and make bearing sounds.

i have a screen coving my air intake so theres no sticks of leaves in there. the noise seems to come and go as it pleases. i loosend the belt one thin
shim and then started the engine and no noise but id been running that belt tension for quite a few months before the sound developed

You can pickup used generators pretty cheap...
freight is a killer if they aren't local..
the bearings in the generator are common and shouldn't be expensive.. [I think]
if the bearings are dry [no grease] they will eventually
fail and either fall to bits
or seize up and stop the generator..

Take the belt off the car and start the engine. If the noise has gone its your belt/genny. I had a noise like this that would go when I revved the
engine. In the end it was the butterfly shafts on the carb were worn and letting air in causing a wierd sound.
You can actually buy new bearings and replace them, but a new/replacement genny is an easier option.
Cheers

genny belt is clean and free of dust, i tried tightening the pully first but that seemed to make it worse so i loosened it off.
yeah i think ill just buy an alternator kit.
