Broken clutch tube

The clutch tube on my 1956 beetle has snapped off from between the hand brake and the pedals.
Just wondering if i can run the cable to the clutch pedal without being enclosed in the tube as the cable is always tight, or does the cable need to run thru tube and I will need to re weld it back together.

The tube will need to be repaired.

between handbrake and pedals...

if the rest of the tube is OK then i can't see why
you need that small bit??

the is a Bowden outer cable between the chassis and the gearbox
it keeps the cable taut all the time..

You can allways use a cable that I've seen in Formula vees etc..

there is a nut and thread on the outer [red] cable
and a thread and nut on the inner cable too..

these cables would last a very long time..
they are made to length and you woul need to make a bracket for each end...

Thats what I thought Lee, if the cable is taut, why should it be in a tube, I will look into the formula vee set up tho, anything to prevent cutting holes into floor pan

OK... possibly a dumb question... if the cable is taught all the time and so doesn't really move, what would cause the tube to break inside the tunnel ???

Lee,

without the front mount on the clutch tube (just behind pedals) the middle and last mounts are doomed also........you need three!

........so you will need the front part of the clutch tube intact, or some sort of dodgy repair (maybe) where it has broken off

use the links on this page to get a closer look at the mounts inside your bugs tunnel ...............once you find the pic of your model, click on the area your looking at, in the picture, for an even closer view

It looks like the front weld at the pedal end is just a spot weld, and if that breaks the tube flexes up and down with each pedal application, i would like to try it without a tube and let you all know if it works but my car is a long way off completion
