Lost Keys- What now????
A mate of mine here in Swansea has lost the keys to his Kombi (around mid '60's). What can he do to get new keys cut? Is there a number or
code that he can quote to someone to get the correct keys sent to him?
Regards,
Mark:thumb

1 disconnect the battery
2 get a screwdriver flat blade
3 unscrew the ignition switch and remove wires, mark them so you know which one goes where
4 take it to a locksmith and get a new key cut, they may have a VW blank, or use what ever to get it going
5 keep an eye out on Ebay as you may find an origional blank and have it recut

volksbahn in sydney used to have key blanks a few years ago, you could try them.
if it has the beetle style switch, try any old keys that you have lying around, of about 10 early keys i had 6 or so (all different) would start my
car .

just take the door lock to a good locksmith ( not mr key guy in the shopping centre) and they should be able to find the number on the lock and cut
the key for you. my guy did and it cost a bit but you have the original lock and new keys, yahoo. if the ignition key is the same as the doors your
home and hose. if not you'll have to take out the ignition and take that to him, a bit trickier. cheers, fish

the later models have the key number stamped into the side of the lock cylinder.
so if He can get in... break a window etc..
and take the door trim off to replace the glass PLUS take the door handle off...
Its silly Not to have a spare or two or three keys... I used to have a spare key inside a tail lamp etc so all I needed to get it was a phillips head
screw driver..
Don't put the spare key on the back of the number plate screw.. that is too common a place...

Hi
The key code on early switches is on the tang that the screw goes into. Go see an automotive locksmith, not a guy at shopping centre and thay can cut
keys from the code.

1302Steve, you're right (as usual). I've got the switch here at home, so I looked to find some numbers and couldn't find any, like you
said. Then I scratched some paint away and there were some numbers.
They are as follows:
34L089
Anyway, no need to break any glass, it wasn't locked.
Now my mate can take his lock cylinder in and get a 'few' keys cut.
Isn't it great to come to this forum with a problem, then 'talk' about it and end up with a solution(s). See, "What problem?"
Thanks everyone, you're all great, well most of you.
Regards,
Mark

I met this guy in California at a Swap meet, he told me he specializes in cutting keys from codes etc I dug out his card for you,
gabvwkey@cs.com
phone america 209 4622851
He seemed pretty switched on in that reguard he may be able to tell you where to look for a code number and then make you a key but I would probably
try the local locksmith first.
Cheers Tony

Thanks everyone.
I took the lock cylinder to a locksmith in Hobart and he had it cut and copied in about 2 minutes.
He put this thin 'key like thing' into the cylinder and it came up with the profile/type on a computer, he then keyed (excuse the pun) it
into the key cutting machine and it was cut while I waited.
Too easy!!!!!
Thanks again for all your input.
Regards,
Mark
PS
To Bug eyed.
Yes, you're welcome here in Swansea. But, I wouldn't help myself to my mates Kombi, he's a big fella and he'll hunt you down.
He's very passionate about his Kombi :thumb
