Importing cars

I've just had a job offer in Sydney so am looking at how much it will cost to get my dubs over there - makes a change shipping out of the uk!!

Looking on the customs website its a minefield trying to figure out the custom charges and tax. Is anyone on here clued up and is there anyone who has shipped UK-Oz?

If I accept the job, I'll definately be bringing my splitty and money allowing hopefullly my Oval too. Am I right in saying I won't be taxed on them as they are over 30 years old?
Is there an easy way to work out the GST?

Reading threads on here, it seems like its alot stricter on modded cars than the uk. Although both mine are currently off the road, I'm hoping to have the van sorted before leaving the UK but the oval is a long term project.
I've done a fair bit to the van which is briefly listed below. Does anyone know if anything will be a problem to make road worthy in NSW?
1914 engine
3inch narrowed front beam running late baywindow trailing arms and brake disks
straight axle gearbox with 5-112 pcd hubs
17inch alloys
Dual circuit brakes using a Mk3 golf VR6 master cylinder
line-loc

Everything is bolt-on stuff with no body-mods.

Cheers
Keith

Sorry i'mm not right up on the NSW rules but i think the only thing you willl have trouble with is the narrowed beam as this is a no no with our authorities.

You will get hit with import duties, we don't have the 30 year rule. The 30 year rule applies to ADR's and registration. Customs have also got a lot smarter, they look at the market value of the car as it stands, you could get hit with a beast of a bill if they current pricing is anything to go by.
You will have to get it engineered as well as a RWC. Narrowed beam is a no no, if you are using dropped spindles from a late bay that have been welded, they are illegal as well. Depending on the year of the bus, the seatbelts may fail as they don't meet Oz ADR's for that year. And there are the wheels to contend with and height, it's a 100mm clearance at any point of the car excepting backplates. It's not like the UK where you can mot the car with whatever mods and as long as they are safe, it's good. It's backwards here, I've seen cars that are so unsafe it's ridiculous, but my splitty would fail an engineers because I welded adjusters into the front beam. Makes no sense and it will frustrate the hell out of you.

Thanks for the info

Not doubting you on the 30year rule but in the guide to importing private motor vehicles it states a passenger vehicle of an age 30 years or more isn't subject to customs duty. Is there a a local NSW ruling which supercedes this?
Another option I thought of was classing it as a temporary import. If I've read this right I would then have 12months before having to export it again........or could it then be `officially` imported? (if it must be exported how much is a round trip to NZ? ;) )

As for the mods. Thats a bugger about the beam. Its taken me 14years to decide to mod it! The trailing arms are fine as they are standard bay items (not welded).
Height will be ok as its not stupidly lowered, though it looks like I will have to rethink the whole suspension set up

If adjusters welded into the beams are a nono that rules out my Oval too! Are all lowered cars in Oz running dropped spindles?

I've started looking at the ADR's but my head hurts now. Van is a 66 with dealer fitted seatbelts - I'll have to try and figure that one out

Hi

Your better of reading this than all ADR stuff, this what modified cars in NSW have to comply with.

There is a 30 year rule. All importations need to get approval from DOTAR. Not hard.
If you are going to take the vehicle out again then you just need a carnet from your originating country.

My advice. By a new one here. You got pounds or euro's ...... made in the shade.

You could sell yours in the UK and get very very good money for it, and buy another when you get here. There are quite a few leaving our shores for UK already, so it seems it is a better selling market there, and a buyers market in comparison.

That would be the sensible thing to do and I am going to sell the oval. However, I've owned my splitty for 14years so its got nothing to do with making (or saving) any money. I know its going to cost a small fortune to get it over there and then some headaches to get it road legal but hey, I like a challenge :)

I'm sure about a year ago I read on here about a guy how moved from the UK to Perth and took his split but I can't find the thread now. Anyone know of any Poms who brought their cars with them?

Cheers

Sorry to jump on your thread Keith, but does anyone know what the deal is with importing a race car into OZ, I have my 68 bug which is more of a drag car but is still road legal over here in UK, If I were to import it as a race car would I only be alowed to use it on track?

Cheers,
Rob.

Have a look at this Rob.
http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/importing_...

I would guess that you would have to import it as a road vehicle, not a race car
