Australia's Fastest Kombi - Let the fun begin.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok guys. Got the following email today. It's on for young and old. Already putting a mexican team together.
HI Guys,
Hoping you can help us, could you please put the word out to your members/users or employees about an exciting new internet TV show Heavy is producing
to find “Australia’s fastest Kombi”.
We’re looking for one team to represent their state and build a Kombi van from scratch, source parts and get it to Sydney mid September to
participate in a time trial at Sydney Dragway. The fastest van and winning team will receive $10,000 in cash and get to keep the van. So if you’re
keen to enter your friends, club or garage think “Top Gear meets “American Chopper” where State vs state, man vs machine, kombi vs the clock !!
The competition starts at the end of July, in which teams have 6 weeks to tinker with the vans and participate in the Sydney time trial on week Seven.
Each team will be allocated video camera’s, phones, internet cards and laptops to film the restoration, and the journey spent in coming to Sydney
right up to the race day.
Some competition rules are;
· Heavy.com will provide each team a $10,000 budget to purchase a van, source parts and travel
· All vans must not be newer than 1975 model, have 2.0L engines and teams can only use traditional and standard parts.
· Each team must have a minimum of 5 team members in which at least one must be female
· Each team must provide a secure workshop/garage to work and store the van throughout the competition
· Teams must provide 30 minutes of footage each week to Heavy to produce a weekly show on http://www.Heavy.com. Footage will include teams sourcing the vans and parts, working on the vans, testing it, dealing
with issues etc.. using a team member that has some filming and camera experience is a plus.
· The vans must be presented dent free and painted for the time trial at Sydney Dragway. Teams must display their team names and logo on the side of
the van
· Each team must appoint a team captain who is responsible for that team adhering to all the competition rules.
Please contact Nathan Ruff on Nathan.ruff@heavy.com or 0410 608 329 with any interested participants. Heavy.com will be meeting and casting next week,
so there is not time to lose!
Please circulate to any VW enthusiasts you know.
Call me any questions, anytime
Regards
Nathan

Hi
Thats gonna be hard work, all the poms are paying silly money for bays at the moment so you would be lucky to buy one for 10,000 and 2 litres in bays
didn't start until 1976. Maybe fit a subi to a really rusty bay, then kick all the rust out to make it lighter.

6 weeks x 5 people = 1200 hrs which = $8.33hr (less than Macca's) the TV and Advertising Industry standard for a shit kicker is $35hr
So They are looking for a cheap production, It might be fun But I feel someone is taking advantage of the enthusiast
an Average TV episode is sold to the Networks at $300,000 per (dancing on Ice was 500k per episode)
Hold out for more! after all this forum is basically the VW industry and we are worth more than that.......
register your interest but inform them you need 20k per car and 50 k prize money they will come to that as its still cheap

one thing the WA guys have picked up on is most of our budget will go on transport and accomodation, we'll have to build the van for a couple of
grand!
miniman is also right, why not chop it to the max? no roof, no center section, it will be lighter than your mini then!
also a 2 litre what??? the soth africans have audi and ford donks as standard!
i think i smell a disaster, the rules are too vague and costing unfair, can the WA guys run our van at kwinana drag strip just outside perth??

Hi
I'm 100% sure, I was working in VW dealers at the time, I'm old.
The GA, GB & GC motor was from a 914 Porsche, not a bay.

Hmmm. This is good. Not much competition here. Hey Silver, so someone offers you $10k to build a car and go race it. Then offers to let you keep the
car they paid for and give you $10k on top of that if you do the best job. You would want more money huh? Haven't you missed the spirit of the thing?
Ok, I just saw your signature.

Still missing it! If you were in it for the dough you wouldn't bother. Who cares how much they make? Good on 'em I say. Hope they do a Seinfeld.
Chances are they won't. It's a bit of fun, a bit of life be in it!
I hear what you're saying and that's all good, let's just not kill it for the rest. No kombis or VW peoples will be harmed in the making of this
program.

An episode of 'Austrralia's fastest Kombi' wouldn't sell for $300,000...
Sounds like a bit of fun really. Be good if the local suppliers got involved, would help out on parts/cost and they could advertise on the finished
product.

Just a note in case people have missed it that it says that it's an internet TV show, not free to air, not pay. I've never heard of Heavy, so they
may well be on pay (correct me if I'm wrong here though). If not - then all of their subscribers are on the internet - so that explains the cheaper
cost I'd say, and the smaller payout, because their overheads and advertising is cheaper because they aren't actually on "TV".

good & bad, but weird in that you are supposed to have a kombi up to 1975 only which was before 2L introduced, & excludes 1976 to 1979 kombis
which had the 2L, maybe poorly researched - tradional parts a bit of a vague statement too, just about any mod possible is traditional on VWs by now

i was concerned with what BuggyBrad highlighted about the rules in one of the other threads from heavy,
they end up owning everything (even your ass)
if they see fit you owe them the $10K back if they dont like your effort
a bit game going in from my aspect too

Too vague. Do you get to keep it if you don't win? Does the motor HAVE to be a 2ltr? Does it have to be a type 4 eng? Why shiney paint etc.
I agree too little for too much. After purchase price, paint(even if you dont pay for labour), then travel and accom, you have 20cents to do the
engine. It is also not fair on any one thats not in NSW re traveling costs.
Does it have to be roadworthy? Does it have to have seats? Does......? Does...... Does.....?
