have a look at the front suspension! a beetle has two beams which run the width of the car and have sway bars on the end and a super has big struts coming up to the body from a ball joint at the bottom of the hub

Thanks I will have to have a look on my newly aquired 69-70 bug. What is the best way to date your dub...by this I mean it's date of manufacture, not the dinner, wine & horizontal folk dancing date.

I'm glad you clarified that Rommel, there have been some interesting articles of late about those people who LOVE their beetles too much

theres not
superbugs didnt hit the showrooms till april 71
they were the deluxe model with mcpherso front end, disc brakes, IRS and 1600 engine

then the pov pak standard kept the old body shape with bj drum front end, swingaxle rear and 1300 engine

urs is the same as that but would have discs and originally a 1500 engine

Thankyou Joel I think you are on the money there as it does have front discs and rear drums. I found it in Goulburn N.S.W. Left neglected for a few years. I had to save him, with his wide wheels and body with a whale tail and custom tail lights. Currently yellow but will be matt black with red highlights....engine covers, some interior bits etc.

You will have to post some pics..

The so called Super beetles had the IRS rear end and Mcpherson strut front end which is bolted to the body..
spare wheel lays flat on all Supers 1302s and 1303S..

the NoN Super beetles have swinging rear axles and the front suspension is bolted to the chassis and is very strong..

If Your beetle is a 1969 model it will two small levers under the dash on either side to turn the heaters on..
this was ONLY on the 1969 VW model year which means the car was made between 1st Aug 1968 and 31st July 1969 which was the Volkswagen Year model...

All Automatic beetles 1968 to 1974 have the IRS rear axles and front disc brakes [Supers and Non Supers]

Your engine number should start with H which means its a 1500 engine but most are now 1600.. and it would have been a single port engine..
Oddly enough the H series engines are well regarded as a great engine in most countries except the USA...

Your engine cover would have had no vents in it...
although the 1970 year models did have two sets of vents..
the vents are recommended to help keep the engine cooler in the summer...
holes in the top of the whale tail do the same...

cheers

LEE

Thankyou guys and girls. How do I judge the date of manufacture as mine has these Mcphersons up front you talk about so it mustnt be 69-70. Just got back from Monster garage in Penrith. Damien the owner is a top bloke who seems to know his stuff. Bought half an engine while I was there so busy, busy for me;)

ok if it has struts its mid 71 on till 76.
if you look at the bottom of the of the strut where it joins the spindle. if it has 3 bolts going down like this http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v353/barls80/IMG_0188.jpg its 71- mid 73. if it has 2 bolts like modern cars its 73-75. 76 has the beam front end
