Would have been real hairy in the 60's & 70's considering the advancements made in driver safety etc!
I remember a story about Allan Moffatt when Ford brought him over from Canada. They were showing him around Mt. Panorama and sun was setting, he said
to his rep that it is getting late and they might want to get a move on and show him the racing track before it gets too dark.
......Um....mate,.....your standing on it!!

Hi
Talking about Moffat, have you seen his book with pictures of him racing a Beetle.

Hi
I just looked up Allan Moffats bio ( http://www.allanmoffat.com.au ), he had a
Marketing Cadetship at Volkswagen Australia, might explain why he was racing a Beetle.

I did a few laps a couple of weeks back. I used to do a fair bit of work with a client in Bathurst and would always do a lap or two when I drove
up.
I even scored pole!

Excuse my ignorance, but how much if any of the track is public road when there's no racing. For years I just assumed it was a race track, but I get
the feeling that at least part of it is a normal (if windy and scenic) road for the rest of the year. I'm from Adelaide you know

It is a public road - two-way with a 60 kph speed limit all the way around.
The local Council is buying up all the enclosed properties as they become available - using money provided by Little Johnnie a few years back. Last I
heard (a couple of years back) they had about half the properties. They plan to turn it into a dedicated track at some stage - on the same basis as
the Nurburgring. Front up with your road car and some dolleroos and buy some laps - un-restricted.
Don't expect that miserable car-hating Labor party mob to help though.
There was a closed session a while back - I think it ran for about three days, but it was big bucks (IIRC about $4k) to do it. I'm hoping its a bit
more like the Nurburgring model - where its about $15 a lap (might be Euros over there)

Thanks for the info. So even the main straight/start/finish line bit is a public road? And I bet the track is a lot steeper than it appears on TV.

Yep - the whole road is a public two-way road.
Oh yeah - the track is STEEP. That first shot of me is at The Dipper - which is definitely less scary at speed than if you are tootling down the hill
- the road just drops away from under you. I well remember the first time I went down there - on a Honda 750/4 - it was much nicer on the second lap,
pegs scraping away (which didn't take much).
Btw - the Rat crashed up top - on the flat.

This is racing, we where four abreast in the first corner and we had a better start than Garth Tander
No one was going to give up on the first corner but I had the inside line.

good one Rose the inside running is always king. I can remenber back in the 70's a kangaroo or two hopped across the track, caused a bit of a
kerfuffle for a bit,the people who owned the the farms had access roads.

The ghost of gearbox #1 (of 2) that ended my racing career haunts the top of conrod too.
Its an awesome place. I recommend walking the track. I did it one night in the rain and it was hard thing to do. Dont stand on a wet ripple strip!
I can guarantee you that if BCC gets hold of it to do a Nurburgring style jobbie you wont see $15 laps. More likely to be 10 times that. The liability
insurance costs will be unbelievable. Your car insurance wont cover you. They'll have to set up a new hospital to keep up with demand. Last time I
camped at the top of the mountain they wanted $15/head for a campsite with no showers and the BLCC had to provide rubbish bins. I think they also
wanted $90 or something equally stupid to use a pit bay for a day. A council worker had to come and undo the padlock you see.
I think the council would be more likely to be buying up to allow greater use of it for major race meetings. At the moment residents would be a big
hinderance for staging events and are therefore costing the council a mint. Also, if they own it, they can close it when not in use to minimise the
hoons and vandalism.
