Steering wheel recon.
Does anyone know what VW finished the steering wheels in, back in the day? I have a ratty looking black 4 spoke on the 72 super that I want to clean
up. I am thinking just spraying it in acrylic with a few coats of clear but I don't know how well that would hold up.
The misses told me of a joint that recon's them here in Bris but she has forgotten where.
Suggestions?

don't know if it helps you in any way but thought id share anyway. we restored a 356 steering wheel at work by sanding through all the paint then ran
a saw through any cracks in it. brushed resin into the cracks and sanded that back and then painted it in 2 pack paint. came up pretty good.

Cool, so paint does stick to it.
This one has no cracks in it so maybe I'll try sand blasting it.

just make sure you rough it up a little bit even after sandblasting it to make the paint hold better.

Has a few details on how they do it.. I've heard they are quite expensive but their work looks really good.

The origional colour in the wheels was part of the plastic use to make the wheel

Maybe I should be looking at a plastic coat type of thing rather than spraying it. Does anyone know of a product for the DIY market that will give a
good result?
