I had Passat 17"s on mine.
just need to machine the centre bore a little.
It had Audi rims on it when I got it.
Most people seem normal, till you get to know them.

I have been told in the past that T4 wheels will fit as they have the same bolt pattern if you like the commercial look. i believe that many alloys
now seen on kombis do not meet the load rating required for this type of car. same goes for tyre choice. i dont believe they make a low profile 17
inch light truck tyre? but i may be wrong.

I have Merc ET39's for my Bay kombi. These did NOT fit on a '89 T3 kombi.

On the front the rim + tyre hits the top of the suspension, so physically will not bolt on.
I have seen steel merc rims on T3s' though, just not sure what offset they were.
Stock T2 and T3 kombi rims are the same offset I think, and ET39's are close to stock offset. (sorry I don't have figures, but can measure if you
like).
Steering and handling are better if you can stay close to stock.

quite often need to fit spacers when fitting other manufacturers/models (audi, merc, other vw) wheels on T3's due to issue mentioned above.
there is an endless supply of info on brickyard and samba regarding after market wheels for T3's
