Willowbank autocross Kombi video added
Well,,, what a ball !!!!!!!!!
i`m trying to get ahold of one of the Holden sporting car club members who has some video footage of the big hevy barge fangin around the track,,,
pushing like a bugga then loose as a goose :-) It`s definately not the best choice of vehicle for an Autocross :-) On my first 2 runs I was sent
out straight after the water truck so it was a bit like trying to run up a geasy slipperyslide :-)
But i will attempt some suspension & steering mods in the hope of getting some front end grip some time soon,,, hope to at least get "Some" sort
of Neutrality into the old girl
anyways,,, as soon as i`ve got the footage i`ll stick it up on you-tube & post a link to it here
cheers & i`ll let you all know when the next one is on,,, you really should try to get out there,,, it`s an absolute blast,,, i`ve forgotten how
much fun it is to race it`s been quite a while
Only one mini & only one VW entered ,,, sad,,, very sad :-(

So is this a dirt one, and do they allow offroad tyres?
I always wanted to go to the motorkana type events but the grass events wouldn't let me enter with my offroad tyres. And I didn't want to destroy my
offroad tyres on bitumen surfaces
PS - No wonder you break gearboxes

Here`s a bit of footage that one of the Holden Sporting Car Club guys got of the old girl
It was terribly pushy & then obviously taily but i`ll have a play with things to see if i can improve on the traction dept & have another go
next year
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=GaKsdgtK0Co
At least the gearbox held up nicely :-)

saw that vid mate. crazy, crazy stuff mate
you need an overwide front end and a midmounted motor...you could do it while you're changing the trans next (which shouldn't be far away)
have to say congrats though coz most people on this forum think VWs are for cruisin (code for "going slow like a nanna"). Great to see you out there
mixing it up and having a crack. You've gotta a whole lot of spine to drive something so top heavy like that.
How did you rate in the results?
p.s. Wes, when are you gonna have a go at these? put some cheap road tyres on some fat steelies and go learn to drive properly.

Wes, road tires only, even some mud and snow are not allowed....
Normally semi slicks are the best, as the gravel gets hard packed and rubbers up over the day.
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

As I say I have wanted to have a go but never had a full set of street tyres and rims sitting around.
I finally had some steel rims once I bought the centerlines, but then someone borrowed my steel rims, for about 5yrs!
I finally have my rims back. They are a lot rustier. Now I just need some street tyres.
PS - Pete, I know how to drive properly. I usually finish first when karting with mates, even when they make me start at the back (reverse grid). We
used to go once a month with guys that were pretty seriously into track days with their cars too.

karts, scmarts...
anyone can push their mates off the track besides which, if memory
serves me correct, you're weedy and weigh less so of course you are gonna be faster than your fat mates.
khanas are a real test of your ability. you screw up and you loose. dirt makes it all the more interesting coz the lack of traction means you need
more technique. Now, no more whining about rusty wheels, just get out there and have a go!
BTW, you may want to add a rear sway bar.

thanks guys, it wasdefinately bags of fun,,, i actually used to hold the lap record at the autocross track in my road mini,,, there would be about 70
odd entrants with about 9 or 10 of them being 4wheel drive turbo rally weapons & yet the little ol green mini comes first :-)
The Kombi ended up about half way down the pack,,, had my first 2 runs straight after the water truck tho :-( ,,, my 3rd run wasn`t so bad tho, think
it managed about 10th outright :-)
The motorkhana this weekend at the end of the drag strip, i`m gonna have a run in that too :-) & yes, it will be a hand full i`m sure,,, & yes
i`m taking a spare axle & CV assys with me,,, but i don`t have a spare box tho :-(
Pete,,, yes i`d dearly love an old duel cab splitty ute, with mid mounted twin turbo lexus & 4wheel drive,,, now that would be sweet,,, i`ve been
wanting that set up for quite a few years now, but this ute came up for sale inbetween times & i just couldn`t resist :-)
When i win the lotto i`ll make sure i devote all my time to that 4x4 twin turbo mid mounted lexus V8 spiltty duel cab project,,, make it look fairly
stock std tho :-) Then we`ll see who wins the autocross yeah??? :-)
I really miss my old splitty single cab with the leylkand P76 donk up it`s bum,,, now that car actually handled quite well

Pete He didn't drive it into a tree?
The tree jumped out at us? Thats my side of the story.
Anyway its a lot easier fixing a bull bar then trying to get the kombi off her side or the roof and then having to fix the damage done to the body
work.

tree jumped in front of you...that husband of yours has really has got you believing that? My wife is a psychologist, I'm sure she has a name for
that sort of relationship.
And call me a prophet of doom, but if MR t doesn't have a good go at putting it on it's side on the beach I'd be very surprised.
p.s. if you want to avoid rolling it, just put some smaller tyres on for the khana

Yes I am weedy, but so are some of them. Besides, on the powerful karts we notice the weight difference gives a tiny bit more acceleration, but the
heavier drivers get more grip in corners. It evens out pretty well.

Since everyone in a khana has completely different cars, I think it going to prove the cars performance more than the drivers ability.

hee hee,,, well,,, a motorkhana really is simply a test of your driving abiliy, big cars are in the big car class, small cars in the small car class,
etc ,,, it goes on wheel base
Minis have a destinct advantage in overall honours, but that being said , a decent driver in a big car often beats an average driver in a small car
But now i have opened the proverbial can of worms,,, how about some of you slack buggas finding your way out there this weekedn & have a go ya
mugs :-)
I`m definately not going to be winning any trophy in my big lug of a kombi, especially with a hand brake that is more like a "retardant" than a
brake, & with it`s big tyres i can`t see me flinging it around like i would my mini, but still i`m going to have some fun & learn how to chuck
this big ol girl arond a bit more :-) besides i`m going out there to catch up with some old mates like Alan McConnel & Peter McCloy....
you should all come out to watch Alan run his special anyway,,, he`s taken out the Australian Motorkhana championship quite a few times & is quite
spectacular & well worth the effort to get there... Bring the familly,,, that`s what it`s all about,,, Peter McCloy is teaching his kids how to
drive there & they`re all entered in the event. you guys should do the same,,,
safety is just one of the off-shoots of this sort of thing, Just like breathing & walking--->when kids can drive without thinking , by the time
they get their road licence the roads become a much safer place... Just imagine if all the kids in the world were taught how to drive when they`re 5
or 6 years old & then keep up the prcatice in events like this,,, there really would be far far less accidents on the roads.
anyways,,, i`d type on for ages about this stuff & i`m sure you`re all bored to tears with my dribble,,, get your arses out there & enter the
event,,, that`s an order!!!!!!!! (beetles are especially good for these events) :-)

I don't think my car would be fast in that type of event. The center of gravity is quite high, and it has no sway bars at the moment. This event
would suit people with street cars. My handbrake also doesn't lock the rear wheels.
What I was saying was, if I get out there it will be to have some fun. My position would be fairly irrelevant, as mini-man said, it is about having
fun whether the car is competitive or not.
