help floor pans for 71 super bug can any one tell me what im in for and how much it may cost


We finally got the seats of our bug today and the worst was realised looks like we are going to need new floor pans . Just wondering if anyone knew how much and wat is roughly involved with removing them. or alternatively any regulations as to how we can weld the old ones.keep in mind we are from adelaide.

also im new to this and i really dont want to screw it up id cry if i lost the beetle plus i had a guy over me a few thousand for it and i said no because it might not look that much but its gonna be awesome it has potential there is rust but its nothing that cant be sanded out only 3 really bad spots a job for a pannel beater but the floor pans are i think are a must replace thing but if i can avoid doing i will if its possible but i dont think it please help me

If it is a Freddie Flintstone there is really only one way to do it and that is to replace the pan halves,they are not all that expensive aftermarket.I would think there is probably a couple of days work. I am not sure what a good panelbeater would charge but a good professional is definitely recommended. Cheers Les

you can replace them in halves? wow i didnt know that you could do that also the hole was under were the battery sits we found that out when we took the new battery out after we started it (last time it was started was in 93)the glory was short lived after we realised we could smell petrol then seen it all on the ground

Have a read here to get an idea

Dunno if i agree with the welding not being necessary

Also be aware that there are new pans and new pans
Different thichnesses
Some are no better than alfoil

Also the seat runner attachments are no better than blu-tak

Hopefully you can take yours off and reweld these

yes - if they are salvageable

The quality of original stuff is always better
If it is just the battery area then definitely just repair.

well it just im worried that if it goes over the pitts they wont pass it like i said we had to weld abit underneathh were the battery sits and theres black stuff under he the rubber matting thats slpit and revellad rust and there like a dent in it it feels really weak when when you stand on it

so if it were to go over the pits it would still pass? ill try and put some pics up of where we had to weld it and were the floor is weak also is it legal to get a piece of metal cut to the shape of the pans and weld it to the inside to reenforce it?

i have a similar problem except worse! i have pretty large speed holes in both sides in the same spot as yours and probly nee new pans:(

does anyone know where i can get replcement ones of decent calibur in brisbane????

As a guide Custom Vee Dub was charging $550 drive in / drive out per side supply and fit. Just to give you an idea of how long / what it was worth in shop speak. If getting both sides done at once it was $900.

Single side was 2 day, both sides was 3 day job.

I wouldn't worry to much about the quality of halves, most are from the same factory these days. Just make sure you get them with the right seat runners on.

Also there is a DIY DVD out that really goes deep into replacing the pans in half's and how to do it.

But seriously show the pictures of the rust, and stuff, as the pans are fairly flexible, and if the pans are rusted your heater channels are more then likely in a real mess too.
