Moving to Brisbane for Work, Suggestions of good Places to live???

Hi Brisvegans,

I am moving to Brisbane for work in a place called Murarrie, just south of the river.

Any suggestions/local advice, prefer to stay south of the river to avoid traffic. Is the traffic really that bad, cannot be worse than Sydney.

Looking to rent a 4 Bedroom house close to parks for walking etc, no matter for a garage as I am not bringing any of my VeeDubs.

Cheers,

David

Hi David,
I work at the port not far from Murarrie and we used to live at Birkdale its not a bad suburb and only about 15-20 mins away also try Gumdale. The traffic is pretty bad in Brisbane now, but i think you will find its still not as bad as Sydney.
Good Luck,
Bob

Anything around Murrarie close to the river is expensive. Like Bob said look just east of Murrarie towards the bay. as for traffic it isn't anywhere near as bad as Sydney but certainly is heading that way. and with all the major construction of infastructure going on in brissy atm every direction from the city is basically affected.

Cannon Hill is a good suburb, should be a few 4 bedroom house around there that might suit - and you will be against the traffic.

Otherwise Murarrie has a train station, and if you can handle public transport then you could live in the bayside suburbs of Wynnum or Manly. There are some good areas around there, but also some to avoid. Parks are plentiful and generally they are quiet suburbs.

I'm at Birkdale, and I know first hand that Rickert Road is a dog at peak hour so I'd rule out Thorneside, Birkdale, Capalaba, Cleveland etc.

Get a 1 garage and bring up the 54! (unless someone has made a very smart decision and bought it already.)

David, my suggestion would be Ipswich, short stroll to Brissy and they love VW's out there..........sure the QLD boys will back me on this suggestion. How long you gone for or is this a premanent move?

Traffic suxs up there! Im there every few months and i reacken its easily as bad as Sydney if not worse.

On one visit there was a suicide jumper on the gateway bridge so they shut it down - wow, that was a mess, worse then a harbour bridge shut down.

In saying that there are heaps of road works going on (geez there slow up there) so it may get better.

Ipswich is a hole (so im lead to believe)

From someone else who did the relocate from Sydney a few years back, welcome to Brissie !!!

:D

I came here on a 2 year contract, and somehow it's turned permanent. Sydney will always feel like home, but I'm going back there for a very long time.

Working in Murarrie, try to stay very close to the South side of the river... I'm at Morningside and think it's a great place, Cannon Hill is good too as is Capalaba, Manly, Wynnum, Birkdale that people have said are all pretty nice places. All are pretty cheap I think compared to Sydney prices. A bit further in you have Bulimba (fancy riverside suburb), Norman Park and Seven Hills. Still a pretty drive to Murarrie, but much better for public transport into and out of the city if you're into the nightlife there.

btw Mick058 - when everything is flowing the traffic isn't as bad as Sydney, but here there's really only 2 or 3 main roads to places so if something goes wrong on one of them everything grinds to a halt since there aren't all the alternative routes like in Sydney.

Oh and yeah - I'd stay away from Ipswich unless you drive an armored vehicle - the only burning/burnt out cars I've ever seen in Brissie have all been around Ipswich and Redbank Plains.

I live in Camphill on the Sth Side near Cooparoo and love it - it is all going to come down to your budget as there are good and bad pockets in most of the suburbs

There are some cheap houses in Murarrie,,, walk to work,,, easy to hit North/south coat freeway right there in your face,,, major shopping centre one block away

Can buy a house for $350 & upwards right now ... or rent for about $300 p/w upwards

there are some very expensive houses here in Murarrie too tho,,, the Yuppy-ville side of Bulimba is moving over & catching us up fast.

Be quick tho

Cannon Hill,,, Seven hills,,, Tingalpa are all good too & right next door,,, Hement is even cheaper if you don`t mind to slum it for a bit &/or you`re keen to walk up hill to work -)

Edit--> Oh & only 5 or 6 mins to the city too :-)

Depends what you're into !!!

;-)

A lot of those areas are pretty family oriented - some nice parks and so on around the place, bushland etc. If you're into the Sydney or Melbourne style cafe scene, well Bulimba or New Farm is where you'd go. Nightclubbing etc. Fortitude Valley or in the city are going to be your best bets.

All pretty close by, and altho trains suck in Brisbane, the buses aren't bad and the ferrys are pretty good.

Brisbane's a pretty liveable city really, and anywhere near Murarrie puts you pretty well smack in the center of it all.

hey
I lived in kangaroo point next to da city (walking distance) for years (now rented out) n it's about 10-15min drive to your work area
the best part was that when you started work u basically drove against the traffic as u r driving away from the city peak times
let is know where u end up yeah
