Renault UN5 Gearbox
Hey, has anyone used a Renault UN5 gearbox in a beetle with success?
What would be the mods to fit such a beast?

Hi
Great gearbox, but 1st you need to find some rocking horse dodo, a unicorn and other stuff that's hard to find, then get some unobtainium to swap for
the gearbox.
Seriously, they come from cars that were never sold here, they have now mostly been chewed up and spat out by the off road crowd

UN5's are quite long and need mods like a G50 to get in.
They are big in the offroad scene and I have seen a few fitted to Baja's etc.
They are actually pretty easy to come by and guys bring them in from the UK by the container load. Pulling about $2k a unit though and the gears are
pretty low.
That said they seem to be getting a pretty good rep offroad and there are a lot of mods avail for them.

Albins apparantly now do gear sets for them. they weren't fitted in cars that I know of but moreso front wheel drive Renault trucks of about
2-6tonne. Very beefy case and a 9.25" corwn wheel they are pretty tough. My cousin has one in his jacked up Split panel van with bay running gear and
has tried everything to break it.... without success!!!
He has broken a few CV's and bent the chassis at the front actually broken the body off the mounts of the split chassis doing wheel stands and the
like but the box hasn't made a noise of shown any signs of breakage at all.Not to mention the gearing of the thing makes it just about unstoppable
with 12R 35.....
You have to do some serious mods to the torsion housing and get the torsion bars shortened and re splined but it certainly can be done.
