Newbie in the market to buy!
Hi everyone! Always had a dream of having a VW since i was a little kid..my sis wanted a porche and i wanted a VW...
Theres one for sale in my old hometown ..not sure if i should advertise it as someone else might buy it?..whats the etiquette here?
..im pretty keen on it...and have contacted the ppl that have been servicing it and they said not to pay more than late $2000's for it...how do i
approach this issue with the buyer when they've spent about 3k on restoring it...
any help would be fantastic!!

ok first off where are you their may be a member in the area that can have a look over it for you. also you could just talk to them and start
negotiate with them for it. did the people that have been servicing it give a reason why not to pay over 2G.
also have a read of the thread that gives the normal problem areas for the model your looking at.

Im in Geelong, but the car is in Central Victoria, area...dont wanna give too much away incase any1 buys it on me!!!
My main point in negotiating the price is the fact ive gotta get a RWC, and fork out $ to fix the electrical issue with the lights/wipers/fuel guage.
(and whatever else they find!), plus the paint job (im not really worried about that at the moment, but i'll play on that point)
no they didn't really give a reason, i was going to call them back and ask..from what i can gather the motor is fine, its more the electrics, and the
mechanics a/electricians in the area apparently dont like to work on VW's.? ...thought this was a strange answer..

sure its a type 1 bug. your search was most likely to specific. also make sure you change it from this week to from the beginning.
most of the bugs suffer in the same ways.
the big question is if its a factory convertible or a chop top.
the reason is most chop tops dont have the reinforcing required by the removal of the roof
if you post a pic we can tell also the car might be know to one of the vic members

Beetles weren't originally called Beetles, it was a nickname that stuck and eventually became official. The actual model name is Type 1. Then the
Kombi is a Type 2 (others will correct me if I'm wrong), and then you have Type 3 in notch, fast or squareback (sedan, hatch-ish and stationwagon
respectively).
BTW, I see what you mean about the paint. I'd want them to pay me to drive around in a car that colour!!!

Thanks for the explanation Oh no, I LOVE the PINK!!!..but its got
surface rust cuz paint is thinning..needs to be redone. Can you tell by looking at it if its a factory convertible, or a chop top?

This is not a factory convertible..
It is heavily modified..
I would strongly urge you to get a stock beetle, registered and running as your 1st VW.. Buying other peoples projects or buying vehicles requiring
work is really only for those that can afford a lot of downtime and can do a lot themselves.. You will almost certainly not be prepared for the amount
of work " just a few things to fix up" actually is in the end..
Poor electrics are a sign the car has had poor workmanship in the past..
Its up to you but I can guarantee that if you follow this advice, you will save tears and dollars.. Good luck

thanks barls..there's only one in that list that i could prob afford.
i'll copy and paste all the stuff that i know about the one im interested in
STARTS FIRST TIME EVERYTIME VERY RELIABLE CAR,
RELACED, (maybe thats a typo and needs to be 'replaced')
NEW WHITE ROOF (aprox $1100)
HEATER BOX
GEARBOX
STEERING LINKAGES
BATTERY
NEW TYRES - PINK CONVERTIBLE MAGS
said in the last 3 years prob done only 1000 ks
said theres some issue with the electrics where the fuel gauge, lights and radio work sporadically...
they also said this about it...'put new cd player in at local auto elec he fixed elec prob, but only lasted 1 week and it did it again did not take
back coz he was not sure bout elec wiring in bugs.
after that took it back to another guy man who fixed elec prob for bout 3 weeks and it stuffed up again..."
fibreglass wheel hubs cos they are flared as it has mag wheels and drivers side need little repair b/c daughter cracked it abit... (ive
emailed to find out more info on the crack)
they also said they couldn't get a rwc because "local mech said he will not give me one, car is to old."
so......thats what im working with....
are there any major red lights there?!

You have some major red flags.
- Owners can't be bothered getting a RWC with the excuse that it's "too old" (which of course is rubbish)
- Broken fibreglass
- Dodgy electricals, that appear to have been stuffed around with by more than one set of hands
- No information on who did the chopping and what strengthening work has been done underneath to compensate for any loss of rigidity
Unless you know how to fix these things yourself, then it's one to stay clear of. If you're tight for cash, then you don't want to risk buying
something that becomes a black hole that sucks in all your money just to get it roadworthy. To give you an idea, I paid $2,600 in 2007 for a fully
roadworthy, original 1974 L, which (like all old cars) needed a few things sorted, but is essentially in good nick.
It's hard to be dispassionate when you see something you've dreamed of, but it's better to wait for the right one.

You can do better
I had a panel beater friend that sold the beetle below for $4500 with full rego, a new paint job, new roof and interior, and it was engineer approved
Sunbug.
I think you can do better than this, a chop top conversion severly limits who can resell the car too, it being pink limits it even further.
I'd keep looking.

the pink is fine in my books...
the local mechanic was the one who said he wouldn't do the RWC..not the owner.
the VW guy whos been servicing her car and did the electrics said it wouldn't be a big issue to fix..but then again...it has failed twice....
the broken fibreglass is a crack and only a few inches high...not a big deal in my books...unless fibreglass cracks kinda spread or fall apart?
the guy above got a good deal hey!
im calling michael tonight who has the below car....and we'll see how that goes

I understand it was the mechanic and not the owners who said it was "too old", but if the owners couldn't be bothered trying anywhere else, or just
letting the mechanic get away with it with just that excuse then they really aren't trying, and paying anything over $1,000 is ripping yourself off.

the semi auto looks like a good buy,they are easy to drive(no clutch to push) ,just make sure the gearbox shifts smoothly with no grinding as that
means big $$
