Shortened Sump Quantity
I am a little confused. Today i dumped roughly 4ltrs out of my bugat5speed shortened sump;
http://www.bugat5speed.de/cms/content/view/30/53/lang,en/
Yeh all good so far, then upon refill.
Total oil refill was only 4ltrs = sump + filter
On my first oil change i used maybe 4.5ltrs = sump +Filter
I am using the stock Subaru dipstick.
Who else is running one of these sumps, how much oil are u using to refill.
Confused because i have run the T3 re checked oil level and i am reading nearer to top of expansion mark on dipstick.
Martin from Bugat5speed stated sump holds 4.25ltrs.
Maybe this has been posted/asked elsewhere apologies if so.
Help
Keep the steering and the propulsion seperate . Still a Kombi...
It's all good, until it's bad, i suppose

How much oil for refill? Oil change, Oil and oil filter.
I know what the sump apparently holds.
But as above last time i dumped oil it took about 4.5ltrs, but this time i am short by 0.5ltr.
Do u see why i am confused.

Did you actually measure it? 'Nearly,' and 'oh yeah man I think so,' are not accurate measurements... A cold engine will retain more oil... etc

This aint rocket science, holy shit, given that sump apparently holds 4.25ltr and filter holds maybe 500ml total for refill should be nearer to
4.75ltrs.
I am reading an original dipstick and it is showing up minutely above expansion mark.
Dropped oil and filter whilst engine warm.
refilled when cold.
Oil actually measured from 5ltr container, of which 1ltr is left in container. Or maybe 1.1ltrs if that even helps

That's right! Hey, oil to the high tide mark on the dipstick should mean a happy donk.. who cares about whether it's 4126 or 4621ml...

No wrong too much oil can have a bad effect too.

I have always put 5 litres of oil in my "shortened" sump...haven't had a problem in the last 4 years with it..You can "overfill" the Subi engines
a fair bit with no ill effects. I wouldn't worry to much with what is on the dipstick.....put your 4.25 L in and re mark it as if it is a standard
stick the high and low fill marks wont be accurate anyway.

Too much oil can get 'whipped' by the crank and overwhelm piston rings and crank seals etc. That's why I said 'to the high tide mark' which is
the engine manufacturer's max oil level spec.
If you're missing 20 percent of oil due to a modified sump, shorten your service intervals by 20 percent too because the oil is working harder

That's easier, shit Mick 5ltrs is more than i have thrown in so i am un-stressing about engine damage as i write.
Thanks

Thats right about engine oil getting "whipped" by the crank...but the oil level is miles away on a Subi engine from the crank...not like some dirty
Fords etc...
This is one of many companies that has been around for a long time and have had no dramas with oil level in shortened sumps:
http://www.outfrontmotorsports.com/oil_pan.htm
Next time you change it,put in you 4.25L or woteva and mark the dipstick....

OK cool.
Blokes the confusion all started at first oil change with shortened sump, at which time i used approximately 4.25-4.5ltrs, no i dont have exact
quantity. Dipstick was spot on full mark
2nd oil change Engine only ever took 4ltrs including filter.
dipstick is at "high tide" mark or expansion mark.
Being that some vehicles did have alot of grief due to overfilling of oil, i began to worry. I have only just done the timing belt 100 thou service
and i dump oil every 5-8 thou K's(in all my vw's) so after much money and effort you can see where i was at.
It's a learning curve all over again

as long as the dipstick matches the engine, it doesn't matter how deep or shallow the sump: you're only losing a litre from the bottom of the sump,
not the top!
