KO 817 is on Bill's Register, but there are no pics in Graham's CB
gallery......at least none identified as KO 817
Another CB undocumented pictorially.......sad stuff.
Surely someone out there has taken a pic or two of this one.
There's lots of blank spaces in CB history, but it is improving all the time thanks to this forum and Graham's gallery.

Graham,
You're right...good looking CB.
I note what appears to be a snorkel type breather exiting the driver's side upper engine compartment.
Also I don't see the typical breather hole in the firewall section ....must have been filled in due to the new breather arrangement.
Interesting.

The "snorkel" (cyclonic pre-cleaner off a Donaldson filter) is not correct, but very common. No VW does well on the dirt without good air cleaning and getting up in the fresh air is the first thing. Mine has a 6 cyl Red Motor Holden air cleaner in that position.
My CB doesn't have the "vent hole" either, in fact I've only ever seen pictures of these. KO817 and KO861 don't have it, may just be an early model thing.
Note the bumper bars on KO813 are not correct, rectangular tube is in the vertical position. Doesn't matter, he did a graet job and I hope he did OK on the deal. I bet he did.

This breather vent hole thing is a bit curious.
I've studied The Gallery at length and found some CB's have this hole, while others obviously don't.

Here's the clearest single example I could find.
It was restored by Randy Carlson of Oldbug here in the US.

You have a new nickname "Snorkel"
Great work on finding all those examples of the rear panel cut out for improved air intake into the engine bay. Despite the number of vehicles with a hole cut out I dont see any of them as being particularly "factory". I have never seen any reference t them in documents, including the original product description booklet and I tend to agree with Tony Bevoracing that they were more one off from individual owners. They seen to be cut out in slightly different locations as well.
KO817 looks like a good buy with resto nearly completed.

Knowing the guy who purchased the vehicle I know he will do a great job in getting it back on the road. The same guy know has 4 CBs and they all run and are fully
driveable and stopable. He will soon set the record as he is picking up his 5th CB this weekend albeit this one is only a parts car. ( he may already have it) He has plans for each vehicle with two working vehicles in and around his property and two really good restorations for special sunday drives. Given 12 months ago he owned nothing VW for the past 25 years he has certainly turned things around and been bitten by the "Country Bug"

Bill, Thanks for your comments on the curious breather vent hole situation. I guess its like lots of things individual owners did to their CB's to suit their theories about car performance or function.....i.e custom cabs, tops, roll bars, nerf/crash bars, etc.
The CB easily lent itself to customization to fit specific needs by its simplistic, squarish, flat panel body.

If this gent owns four CBs which are running and drivable, this must be a record of sorts. I think Graham needs a few pics......a group shot if you will.
That's pretty amazing to me.....four!!!!
The owner definitely got bit by the CB bug!

Am hoping to get down to see this guy over the next few months and you can be sure that all the CBs will be put in a line and some pictures taken.

All of these CBs are on the Register but I have not yet updated the locations for them. Will sort it out when I next bring the Register up to date.
In todays world, 4 driveable CBs under the same roof is some sort of a record. There is another guy in Sydney who has 3 vehicles but only two of them are going and the other is parts only.

Hey Steve, the owner of KO273 has done a fairly meticulous resto there
makes you wonder why they put a fuel filter in the pressure side of the fuel pump, it was never there originally and dont work there well either let alone no hose clamps is just plain stupid espcially with a $2 filter that doesnt even have barbs to keep the hose on

shame to see it go up in flames cos someone didnt spend $6 on clamps

Joel,
I have to totally agree with you.....it's a pretty stupid thing to do.
Placing an unsecured pressurized fuel source above a mechanical component which produces a spark is idiotic. Duh..........
Lots of dumb asses do that here in the US and it's usually only a matter of time before a fuel line comes loose while charging down the road, and the sucker almost burns to the pavement before the driver can exit the premises.
I'm not a card carrying member of the Most Asinine Places To Install A Fuel Filter On A VW.
I believe the dues are too high.

Steve, its just as common here
unfortunaltey in all corners of the globe there will always be the idiots to lazy to get underneath the car and put them in the only flexible hose they can see....:rolleyes:

i couldnt tell you home many vws ive seen burn cos of this and something as rare as a CB would really be a shame to end that way
