Ignition troubles

I have a 64 Beetle and I'm having troubles with the ignition. When I start her up I have to turn the key and push the wire at the back upward at the same time. Once I push the wire upward, she turns over nicely.

What would you guys suggest the problem is and how would I fix it?

Yes,
Your ignition switch has had it...

they don't last forever...

You can get one anywhere.... at VW shops naturally...
or even on E BAY...

How can you push a wire into the ignition switch???
the switch is located under the bonnet...
and the key switch should be next to the ashtray...

the wire should be connected to the back of the switch..

I'm wondering if you have a different ignition switch??

You could also put a push button switch in the dash...
really old beetles had them...

If We knew where you lived that is.....

Whats the BIG secret????

it looks like your beetle may be a late model...
a Superbug .. 1302S in which case Your ignition switch would be on the RHS of Your steering column..
and You can access the wires at the rear of the switch..
so it looks like you still need a new switch....
I'm not sure how to get Yours out as there are a few different switches used... but I thought You couldn't pull the wires off the switch... so maybe You are just helping the switch work.... by pushing on the cable/wire...

so, You still need a new switch...
they aren't too expensive but could be fiddly getting the old one out... I couldn't find any info in the manuals I looked at..

If Your spare tyre/wheel lays flat then your beetle is a 1971-72 model... 1302S Super..
