What's the difference


swapping over from a generator to alternator, the donor engine has an alternator which I have had checked and came up fine so when I removed the genie from the buggy I found that there is no desernable difference between the two stands, seems I remember somewhere reading that there is a difference. Can anyone describe the difference or maybe post a pic of the two.

Hi Don

Have a close look...
the generator stand isn't as long front back to front across the top as the Alternator is larger at the rear of the car...
so, an alternator stand will fit a generator...

but a generator stand will not fit an Alternator without some serious grinding....

Certainly no difference on the two I have but as they were both supporting the genie and alternator on the respective engines then I spose that they are both for an alternator if what Lee says is true, that would mean that at some time the engine in the buggy must have had an alternator and been converted to a genie, kinda strange way to go. :crazy:

You can mount a generator on an alternator stand, but you can not mount an alternator on a generator stand. As described in earlier post, the alternator has a cut out section.
Whats the engine # prefix? That can determine whether the engine was fitted with an alternator or a generator at the factory.

Thanks dogo, the engine numbers are as follows.........F1098580......................S242810 nutha question for those that know, is the tinware attached to the generator interchangeable with that on the alternator? I have read that it is unwise to take the fan off the end of the shaft for fear of it coming loose at a later date if not tightened up properly when reinstaling, but even so, how would you hold the shaft from turning while the large nut at the fan end is taken off.
BTW Lee I travel to Scone fairly regularly, what do you do up there?

gen and alt fan and backing plates are the same

a mate of mine had the fan nut come loose driving along
ive still got the fan under the house its chewed out the mounting hole pretty bad


to hold the gen shaft still while u do up the nut all i do is take the pulley half of and put a decent shift or spanner on the flats that locate the pulley half

the stand may have been replaced at some time...
and if You buy a new one its usually an alternator type..
[depending on where You bought it..]

it may have been replaced unknowingly by someone...

I wouldn't take the fan off... IMHO..

Tops joel, thanks, tho I'm starting to wonder what I have here, the long thin bolts that go through the Geny were so loose that they had worked out and the heads were rubbing on the back of the pully, the nuts holding the inlet manifold onto the head were so loose I undid them with a socket and a extension, no ratchet needed, all the bolts holding the tinwear on the generator to the rest of the tinwear were missing and now I find that I can lift one side of the tinwear up, seems to be missing the bolts or whatever it is that holds it in place.:grind: that makes sense Lee, thanks, trouble is that the tin on the alternator is the standard black and the tin it's going on has been prettied up with nice red powder coat, I'd realy like it to match.:crazy: Now there's an idea, just went to the post where you have a pic of your motor, maybe I could mix and match the colours, have you used normal spray paint or is it powder coated?

The fan housing and the tinware painted red is painted with High temperature pressure pack paint...
the alternator backing plate is just engine enamel...

I had all My tinware painted with red engine enamel and over the tops of the heads it peeled off...
I bare metaled it- and repainted it with High Temperature paint [muffler paint] then i found that My alternator had the small fan on it... so it must have been installed on a non doghouse engine... before I got it... lol
I then decided to go back to the original NON doghouse fan shroud.. [bare metal again...lol] to match the small fan
I used a remote oil cooler last summer - and i have a doghouse oil cooler at the moment sitting down near the RHS tappet cover.. I have another non VW oil cooler to fit
in its place... the coil is painted with ordinary pressure pack paint - which has never blistered or peeled or cracked
