CASTROL GTX2 20w/50 engine oil
every 2000 kms...
clean strainer and use an oil change gasket kit...
113 198 031 VW part number costs less than $5
it contains the two gaskets needed plus 6 copper sealing rings for the small nuts and a sump plug washer..

Do they sell oil change kits (gaskets etc) for all year models?
Who stocks them or are they a common part at auto stores?

Castrol GTX2 or Edge for me, too, in everything I own
but 2000km is a bit severe. I've done that in a weekend. Every 2000 miles (3500ish km) is more than enough for VWs in urban conditions

20/50w is fine if the engine is getting abit long in the tooth but if its a fresh new motor unless u live in the outback then 10/30w is best or 15/40w
at the thickest
most ppl with fresh engines notice a drop in oil temp and very slight increase in power when switching from 20/50w to 10/30w
once u start to get oil light flicker at idle when hot then its time to go thicker
staying OT i run 10/30w pennzoil and a puralator oil filter
more expensive than most but oil/filters are one think u dont skimp on

the block is a 1300 with 1600 pots. don't know how old, all cooling setup is off a 71 1600dp. i am rebuilding the motor at the moment. (new bearings,
full gasket kit, etc. old crank and apparently worked cam are staying in there)

I go for 3000mile (5000km) oil changes with Penrite HPR 30 (20/50W) oil as the engine is a bit old.

I'm with Hellbus on the 5000km interval ,and I use valvoline 15/40 semi synthetic and Hengst filters with good results.Strainer gasket kits are
available at most VW suppliers.

I'm all for penrite hpr 30.... I used to run some high performance motor oil in my 1916, It was specifically designed for bigger boar motors but it
made my engine leak oil heaps, then when i switched to the hpr 30 most of the leaks stopped. HPR 30 How are the webers going by the way? did you get them sorted? Jetted?

CASTROL GTX2 is Recommended for Beetles

Nothing is really for old beetles at Auto stores...
BEST to go to a VW SHOP... they are usually cheaper too
for parts and spares... like Mick motors.. Classic Vee Dub
Wolfsburg etc...
the shops are advertised in VWA Magazine...
the oil change kit is for beetles from 1961 to 1979..
most engines these days are in that group...
I also recommend to buy a few spare sump plate nuts...
its easy to strip them if you do them up too tight... [6]
