Plug lead order on squareback
Hey All, I'm stuck.
Ive consulted books, the net and my dog. None of them could give me the correct order for my plug leads to go on my dizzy cap. One that works
anyway.
Ive tried a few combination's so far.
I know the cylinders are as follows:
3 | 1
4 | 2
I know the firing order is 1-4-3-2
I know TDC is about 10 o'clock on a type 3 dizzy. (although there is a notch on my dizzy at about 4 o'clock.)
Can anyone help me out with the order?
At least if I have that right I can troubleshoot what else could be wrong and she wont start.
Thanks

yes you are correct with cylinder no. posittion and firing order
take the cap off and have a look for the mark in the top of the distibutor body itself (right on the lip where the cap seats).........this should be
no 1 plug position (in some cases it can be no 3 but lets not go there yet).
now in anti clockwise diection from there it is 1 - 2 - 3- 4!!!
yes you are right in the clockwise direction it is 1 - 4- 3- 2
you can see the number 1 "scribe mark" on the dizzy in the fore ground here........

TDC.......take the tappet covers off, wind the engine round till the timing mark on the fan is at the split line in the case. at this point for tdc,
the no. 1 rockers should be both open (with clearance) BUT if you check number 3 cylinders (opposite side of engine) rocker gear should have both
exhaust and inlet rocker moving if you turn the engine back and forth past the TDC position..........further more, you can now check if the rotor
button on the dizzy is pointing towards the "number 1 mark on the dizzy body!!.....WHA LAAA!

dig me pigmi ?
let us know how you go,either good or bad, it's always good to see how it works out

Thanks for the quick reply Daimo.
Small notch is about the 8 o'clock position, so I went 1-2-3-4 anti-clockwise from there.
She still isn't firing, so I'll have a look at what else it might be.
I def have fuel, spark I don't know, hard to set up a test from the front seat.
Thanks mate, I have a good start point now.

yeah, just addded a bit under the photo...that should get the timing close enough to start the engine (with some luck).......
....you could rig up a "remote starter" so you can start it at the engine bay........ connect a line from the terminal on the starter to power
either through a switch or just tap it on the power at the generator (please make sure the car is in neutral TWICE!!! with the handbrake on) and
you'll need the key in the on position for it to fire up.........then you'll be able to see what's going on. you can tell i have no friends with ideas like that

I'll have another go tomorrow.
Might take the dizzy off and turn it around so the notch is @ 10 o'clock, and try again.
Will let you know what happens.

ok more testing this morning.
Def have a spark at the coil. which is nice.
Still a bit iffy on the dizzy situation. all the ones I have seem to have the notch on them about the 8'oclock position, I think on a type 3 it has
to be about 10''oclock? I think thats TDC, books say so.
Is it still possible to get the engine running with that 8'oclock position? I cant turn the dizzy around anymore as the advance cylinder gets in the
way.
bah, mechanical numpy here.

Yeah, I tried a 312 905 205 Z - borrowed from a 65 dual carb notch. Didn't fire either, but again, notch on dizzy didn't seem to be in right place,
was @ 8 not 10 o'clock.
I dont really want to put the kombi one back in if its not the right one. But I will if it gets her going.
Who would have thought it would be so hard to find out the right dizzy to use. No-one seems to know for sure.

you have a short some where so if you can find a friend to turn it over while you watch the moter you mite see the spark if its a short
or turn the motor over untill the points are cloed than turn the key on and using a screw driver open the points you hould get a spark if not look for
a problem from the coil . should be neg to dizzy

Maybe the dizzy drive was never located into the engine correctly (definately wouldn't be the first time) and therefore you need to use Daimo's
explanation to find TDC firing #1 cylinder (both valves with clearance and #3 on the rock when timing marks are to the top), THEN wherever the rotor
points is #1 lead.
Any dizzy will work to start the engine, its just tuning that may not be right with the wrong one. 312 sounds odd, normally 311 part #, going by
memory.

I had fun on one of my distributors where someone had rotated the bottom distributor drive 180 degrees out. Stuffed me for ages until I worked out
what had happened and changed it.
If this is the case then what Matt has said will confirm it.
