did i get ripped off?

i just brought a 1973 VW 1600 super bug L with new fiberglass carrera body kit, goodyear tyres [my cousin who helped me pick seemed to think thesewere awesome] newish upholstery on the seats and an engine in good working order- some parts of the engine are new. shes also got a fandangle gear stick, cd player and racing wheel.

shes got a tiny bit of rust in the rain gutters (i think thats what its called) on the side of the roof , a cracked dash and old school seat belts but besides that seems in ok nick

is $4,300 an O.K price or did i get ripped off?

I won't answer whether you got ripped off, because it's your first car, and it means a lot to you. If you're happy with it, that's all that counts.

I think there were some pics of your car on here a few weeks ago with it's original price. What you paid, seems to be a little more honest than what they first had it up for.

You mention rust in the roof gutters, and I'm wondering if there is any rust down into the c-pillar and heater channels. Usually those fibreglass kit jobs can sometimes cover up a few things.

For the things you're after, pay our forum sponsors a visit. They will have pretty much everything you're after. You will find in time that your bug will grow on you more and more, and maybe in time you'll start to look again. When you do, use your networks that you forge on here to help you find the best car for you, for the best price. Then you'll be sure that you don't get ripped off.

Post up some pics!

I think thats proabably a decent deal. its hard to find a VW without rust... hahaha
.
My 73 L-bug cost $3800 about 12 months ago. it was stock, no bodykit or wheels. It also has "old school seabelts" you can get retractable seatbelts to replace them, don't stress!
My upholstey was the only let down on mine, oh, and the massive dent in the front right gaurd.

Since i got it, iv done the exhaust, new alternator and disi, and had a police car rear end me....

Sounds like you have got a nice car! Enjoy it, take good care of it, and respect it, and it will serve you well. My best piece of advice, take it to a VW mechanic, who KNOWS old VW's, not your local guy who loves hyundi's and v-tec. If you need help with that, ask on here!

From memory, C pillars are the ones at the back, the pillars hold up your roof, so i belive a,b,c from front to back. I could be wrong there.

I really like the look of your new beetle there! the wheels look mega rad. and you've got the sweet driving lights, and something i love, no indicators on top of the gaurds. looks great i think!

where abouts do you live/ who are you taking it to?

Hey Bianca.

yeah they are known too... mainly due to old and cracked fuel lines. i personally have never had a problem but there are plenty of stories of when it has happened and it's not pleasant. they are cheap and can come in very handy. just remember to keep it in an easy to reach place.

Where about in Sydney are you located?

cheers

aaron.

The best way to learn about your VW, and have a look at other owners' VWs (and do fun stuff), is to join a VW club.

You are cordially invited to Club Veedub Sydney's next meeting, which is next Thursday 19th March at the Greyhound Club, Rookwood Rd Yagoona, starting at 8pm. We normally get 50-60 people and no, it's not boring 'moving the minutes' nonsense. It's informal and good fun.

Our webmaster Steve once had a yellow Superbug a bit like yours - he will be there.

Well maintained VWs don't catch fire. Only badly maintained ones, with worn or loose fuel hoses and fittings. Make sure yours is well maintained!

Well done Bianca. I am sure your new bug will give you heaps of fun.

Wayne Penrose is a true VW enthusiast. He will take good care of your bug.

Cheers.

John
