Fixing a broken Carby float
Hi guys and gals. some of you might have seen my post in buying and selling parts looking for a 40 DCNF weber body.
heres the story, basically while rebuilding the carby i managed to break on of the little legs that hold the fuel float in the float chamber. I was
being so careful while undoing the big 19mm bolt next to it to get to the built in filter on the fuel inlet side, but still managed to slip and break
it clean off. of coarse it was the side thats split in 2 for the pin that holds the float to jam into, so i had 2 broke tiny little peices rather than
just 1.
so far no one has replied with any parts or another carb, and ive scowered the internets for replacement carbs or parts but have come up empty
handed.
I ve had a few differnet responses to fixing the problem, greedy sugested remaking the piece, and my brother suggested sticking the broke piece back
on. another suggested getting it welded, but being such a small pair of bits and cast aluminium of an undetermend blend i decided this could only end
in more tears.
so i mixed greedy's idea and my bro's and decided to pin and glue them back on.
so i went out and bought myself a 1/16th drill bit, a tiny little file, a few little dremel grinding tips, and some Loctite automotive metal bonding
and filling paste (real sticky stuff).
so first thing i did was really carefull drilled a tiny little hole in each of the broke pieces, then a matching pair of holes in the body of the carb
to pin it together with
This went better than expected and i got them lined up nicely first go YAY.

once i had the holes drilled and pieces test fitted, i filed the surfaces back to clean them up, washed everything down.
Next step was to paste it all together, dam this stuff is sticky.
and let it set for 24 hrs or more
The packet says 2 hrs set, 12 hrs cure. So i figured 24hrs should be plenty. ill post more after filing back the gue to the right shape and bolting it
all back together.
It should all work fine, its not a load bearing piece, and others have had yrs of success with similar repair jobs. As long as the product i used
actually does it job as writen on the packet.
