Ignition Barrel questions


Hello

I have some questions regarding my ignition, see attached photos please:

I understand that normally the ignition is normally to the left of the ash tray:

But there is no evidence that mine has ever been there,

It is to the right of the steering wheel.


I would like to replace my ignition barrel with a brand new one,
however notice mine is slightly different to Australian built cars,


I wonder if the chrome piece around the outside could be removed on mine and fitted to an Australian spec one, so that it still looks original?


Or where could I source a brand new one of these?


Should there be a cover of some sort over the fuses?



Would appreciate any other thoughts and comments about the ignition, is it been moved...or?

The buttons under the dash are for the horn and the starter, which I would eventually at some point like to remove and have these working as they should be.

Hi Des,

I've never actually seen a starter switch like that..

the 1968 switches are much different too...
and hard to find... switch is all one piece with wires soldered on the end...

If they were used on German made 1965-66-67 beetles
for a certain country??

they will be like the 1/2--1/2 1961 tail lamps...
virtually impossible to find....
and only used Australia and italy..

so Your ignition system may have been only used in one or so countries...
What countries is the Hard Question...

I've never seen anything like it in any books etc...
or websites....


Maybe someone has seen a similar switch???

Yes there is a clear plastic cover for Your fusebox...
possibly the same as a 1968 beetle...

I forgot to add, when you asked me about the steering lock, no it doesn't

I took the key out and wobbled the wheel but it did not "lock" at all

My 1976 Mk1 Golf does not have a steering lock ether,

Should the Beetle have one?


Sorry for so many questions, I have tried searching for the answers but didn't find it.

u have an Origional acessory there it should lock the steering maybe thay didnt drill the shaft

When you say accessory, do you mean that it is not factory fitted?
