Where do i top up the oil?


Okay this has to be the most embaressing question ever.

I have just brought my first type 3 fast back and my first aircooled VW engine.

Ive worked out how to drain the oil from ther car, but buggered if i can find where to top it up! I only had an hour before dark tonight to get her running again. I got it up and running, but tomorrow i want to change the oil.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what oil to use?

Hi

You wouldn't be the 1st person to be stumped by this.

Open the rear boot, just to the right of the boot lock you will see a round cap with raise line on it, that's what your looking for.

Kewl, i saw this and thoguht it must have been it. Now the problem is that the car has had a reconditioned engine put in, i think they have up it to a 1600cc one, and the hole in question go straight through to nowhere!

Am i save in assuming there is somewhere near the back r/h side of the engine block that woudl take oil?

Hi

That hole to nowhere usually connects to tube that's bolted to right rear of the motor, only Type 3s had the hole in the crankcase to accept the tube, it also acts as the dipstick as well.

If you buy a new crankcase for any model it will have that hole that needs to be blanked off its it to be used in anything other tythan a Type 3.

They must have got oil in the there somehow, maybe through the breather like pat said.

The usually just has a plastic cap that sits in the top, its not meant for regular removal.

CASTROL GTX 2 is recommended for air cooled VW engines..

Probably the easiest way to fill Your engine would be to take the fuel pump out and pour the oil down there..

but You don't have a dipstick???

the hole for the dipstick should be there...
when it was in a beetle..

All 1500 engines did have the oval plate for the dipstick as used on type 3 engines...

I think EMPI may make the oval plate [chromed] with an extension for the rubber hose...
or get one off a type 3 engine or 1500 beetle engine and
drill out the hole in the engine....

I use what ever I can find, as long as Its thick.... I used Mobil 1 for a while.... that was fun untill it burned faster that the petrol.

Lee i dont know where you got that from but its not true
no aus factory blocks fitted to bugs had the type3 filler port
any that do arent original cases
most bugs on the road are well over 35 years old so its normal that alot of them dont have the original cases
mag cases are shagged after a few line bores

ive seen a few abused type3s where there rubber tube connecting the oil filler to the engine is gone but its fairly obvious when this is the case

as Steve said they had to fill it with oil some how and check the level

as said above your recon motor may be a bug block
you have a few issues if it is tho

Steve i agree after trying various oils over the years ill never use Castrol or shell oil again

im running Pennzoil in all my cars now
you pay more but the results ive seen so far are worth it

Hi Steve,
I've always used Castrol GTX2 in My beetle...
it seems to be OK...
although it gets dirty very quick...
but then I change every 500 - 1000kms usually...

20w/50 is about the thickest recommended...

although some people use??/60w oil in beetles...

I also know a lot use a SHELL oil too 20w/50..

Castrol GTX is very inexpensive.. compared to GTX2..

so it much be much better than GTX..???

Mobil 1 can be used , but it still has to be changed at 3000miles MAXIMUM... so no benefit...

I don't like changing brands of oil Steve.......

PS: I have a screw on oil filter adapter I will use one day..
is it OK to use this in the oil cooler line???? LEE
