it still has OG paint underneath, i simply sanded, hit the worst of the (surface) rust, sprayed with rustoleum satin black and most importantly, had a lot of laughs doing it...could be the paint fumes, could be the beer eyes but i never lose it in a parking lot! kids stare and wave, parents just shake their heads. who cares! it's registered and drives...oh, and it's still a VW afterall

i haven't cut any rust out yet Dave, and when i bought the car it had two spots of BOG that i could see. it will go back to bare metal when i have the time and $$ to do it properly yeah, there are one or two spots of deep rust, i sanded the whole car lightly, heavy on the worst of surface rust( which covered most of the roof and a few panels, the rest is dry and tight, primed it then sprayed it, not intending to leave it like this for too long. the deep rust was hit with the steel wheel and primed but i still need to replace a few bits with new metal. never painted over rust without prepping first. I might be wet behind the ears when it comes to VWs...but rust is a bitch that needs dealing with properly. :)

thats pretty much the worst of the rust, just bought a '72 fasty so the black will stay as it is till $$ in the VW kitty to do it properly. have no real idea how the fasty is for rust...one of those impulse cheapies...got the space...may as well fill it.

Cheers Izac, yeah, there's something about yellow paint that is rough and shitty, i'd rather look at her as she is until i can afford to do the works properly...and only the once. i have a brand new set of lenses just haven't put them on, they're not far off matching the red of the wheels .what the hell? it's registered and a daily...a bit loud, anybody have an exhaust or extractor to suit that doesn't induce industrial deafness? a blast to drive though, had the old girl wound up on the highway going down to Lennox head and the speedo read 85mph.. felt quite solid too. love those Dubs

Don't sell it just yet, if you are that close to rego.. Roll it for a while, see how it feels, can i live with this car, am i embarrassed to be seen in it? I should think not, if you don't like the way it feels or looks or drives, change it! Won't cost the earth, VW's are blank canvasses, is that how you spell it? that's why so many people love em, self expression and all that shit... it's true, do what YOU like, it yours isn't it? Who gives a shit what people say bout your Dub, hopefully complimentary, but anyways, enjoy your Dub and don't stress, my drives to work in the morning have an impact on the rest of my day, i'm less stressed, happier coz i'm driving a car that is older than most other cars on the road that all look like each other, can find easily in a crowded car park, enjoy the sound a flat four makes, and judging from peoples looks, little kids and grownup alike Dig the old Dubs that are just that little bit different.. think about it for a while. Hapiness is a registered VW... most of the time :)

Thanks Dave, the Monza belongs in the seventies, I have only turned it over once since friday, sounds pretty good, tuning wise, but they really were for looks... too much cocaine will make anyone think shit like that looks good. Still, i remember quite a few units were sold in OZ during those heady days, along with fibreglass kits, horrendous chop jobs, centre consoles, stonewashed denim jeans and matching jackets, richard wilkins.. lycra/spandex...no wait...that looked alright on some of the ladies. will be taking engine out over weekend for a look see at overall condition, roll it as is or recondition. The rust will be cut out carefully with a grinder. THAT much i know. I love VW's

thanks, no i didnt go all the way back to metal, i just did some minor body repairs, a bit of a tidy up. then the spray putty undercoat! woo hoo. i'm lovin the matt paint!

the only sad thing bout the weekend was there wasnt enough type3's, if sunday was any indication, it would seem that they might be rarer than splittys, dare i say?
