Factory super diff???

Recently i bought a splitty that had a gearbox as an extra item. Looked closer when i was moving it around the back and it had a steal side cover, so i puled it apart. It alsow has a 4 spider diff which has is bolts wired.
Beetle box i think?
I've never seen one like this.
Is this a standard vw procedure to wire bolts on these diffs?

Any way , an exelent find. Good type 3 spares.

I would say you scored a super diff, quite normal to tie wire c/w bolts, but Dave will tell all no doubt....:)

Hi Aaron,
you seem to attract all the good "scores".....well, kind of anyway.
The side cover is aftermarket, but quite old and probably a "Crown" brand cast iron one.
They are a good strong upgrade but no longer available.

The diff is not a "super Diff",
but is in fact, a factory crownwheel carrier with a "beef-a-diff" added,
which was also a "crown", and later brazillian made aftermarket up-grade.
Under power the shafts used to bend a little if torque or shock load was large,
but they did work to a point.
I bought a few oldstock ones in the early '90s for about $100 dollars each.

The tie wire method was the standard procedure before the mid sixties to stop the bolts coming loose.
Not often seen onthe 8-bolt crownwheels, since most had the lock washer on the bolts by then.

That trans may be worth a deeper "dig" to see what other treasures from the past that it beholds.
