1600 engine in a '65 6 volt Bug - gearbox probs??
I have recently purchased a dual port '72 Bug 1600 engine and looking at putting it in a 6 volt '65 Bug. What sort of changes would I need to do in
order for the original '65 gearbox to work? Or would it be easier to get the proper gearbox to match?

You will have to change the Starter motor and its bush in the bell housing as it is teethed different
bigger diameter fly wheel will need clearancing in the bell housing as well, not a big job just some trial fitting to do a few times
Keeping it real !

If you get hold of a 6 volt 'O' ring flywheel that takes a 200mm clutch and swap it for the 12 volt flywheel on the engine it will bolt straight in,
no mods to starter or bellhousing, easy.
I have one if you want to go that way.

easiest fix is to machine the 6 volt flywheel to fit the 12 volt crank
its been over 10 years so the memorys abit hazy but we fitted a 1600 twin port to my exs 66 beetle and im pretty sure i got the flywheel opened out
abit to sit on the 12volt crank
keeping the 6volt starter motor on 12volts makes for quick starting and no need for grinding out the bellhousing for clearance
ratios suck abit tho
poor 1600 was screaming its tits off on the highway
