giving the kombi a little boost...

I've had an EJ22 in the kombi for a while now and really like it but can't help wondering what the WRX engine must be like but I don't want to be relocating fuel tank etc...so I started playing around with manifold ideas...

found some old waterpipe down the backyard 1 5/8 ID so back to the drawing board...

cut it up and welded it together...

bought a TD04L and intercooler off ebay...put the intercooler here...

turbo here...

lots off pipe work with a turbo...lucky i had a bit of stainless lying around...

Abit fiddly sorting the oil and water lines but then....fired it up and nothing broke or exploded!

Heheh been driving it for a few days keeping the boost to 5psi....beautiful...went up hills OK before but now it just floats...

time to pull it all back off and finish things off properly...and start looking for the WRX

Have a look for Brendan's VANREX thread for some ideas on putting a WRX motor into a bay Kombi.

Yes I agree Brendan did a great job but as I said i don't want to move the fuel tank and lose any interior space...this is after all my trusty old camper and where Brendan is now storing petrol...I store alcohol amongst other things:lol:

Hi Rob, good to see its worked out

just a couple of questions/observations
are u still running the stock fuel press reg?
with any sort of boost on an EFI engine you should probably be running a remote boost sensitive one to prevent starvation under boost

without some sort of BOV u may find u start blowing hoses on throttle shut

do u know what that wastegate setting is?
the boys at subi village warned me that 6psi or higher is asking for it in a stock ej22 without decompressing and forged pistons

but big thumbs up and i plan on something similar once mines up and running

Hi Joel, I'm running a standard BOV on the intercooler and at this stage just keeping a close eye on the boost gauge to keep it under 5psi....lots of work to be done yet and its all new ground for me. If anything it's running too rich and even tho i probably need better engine management this is just interim til i go fully WRX...heheh or STI...have a spare EJ22 in case this one explodes:grind:...but geez does it lift the old girl:lol:

heheh...I know what I would like it to be like...years ago I travelled around USA in a ford econovan with a 351, C6 tranny and a 9 inch diff...speedo needle would hammer on the stopper at 120mph on quiet interstate highways....we don't have much time left...I'm going for it:smirk:

Rob, When your oil filter is rusty, it's time to change it :)

same oil is fine, but just give it a minute to idle down before you shut it off when hot
even water cooled turbos still benefit from it despite what others will tell you

for those who know these sorts of things...where should a boost gauge signal pipe be attached? which side of the throttle body?

you want the gauge to read vac/boost that the engines actually seeing so between the valves and the throttle body

mine has a vac spigot on the intake manifold that operated all the climate control flaps it would be perfect for the job

Heheh well thats it...i'm in kombi heaven:crazy: i could say i was driving on the M1 at 140k barely touching the pedal but that would be illegal so i won't...i can say that accelerating up steep urban hills in third barely touching the throttle is a new experience in a kombi...thats it! i'm done...any more would be greedy:no:
