How to refit irs torsion cover on new urthane bush? (rear IRS type 1)


I initially figured refitting would be as easy as removal. unfortunately, after a rant and wild scream at the car and tools flying after many attempts, still no success.

the holes of the cover don't want to line up with the threads of the holes on the chassis. I assume its cause of the bulk of the new uncompressed unworn bush...

i got a few ideas, but if anyone has any successful suggestions, i would rather stick to them then stuff around.

2 longer bolts usually does the trick to line the cover up before jacking the arm to position. Once jacked to hight it can be bumped into place along with the cover and the other 2 short screws put into place. Then remove the long ones and screw in remaining 2.

put a jack under spring to help line it up and i use longer bolts to get it started, there is a neat tool that makes it heaps easy:lol:

I was told there are 3 different bushes to do the rear end
two were different slightly...
with different part numbers...
these were original VW type rubber bushes.

311 511 245 x 1 311 511 246 x 1 111 511 245E x 2

this will probably be My next project..

PS: Yes, manuals show a tool that looks like the VW jack
but has different ends...
