Few questions oil / rocker covers / sump seal
Just about to replace the sump seal and rocker cover gaskets...few questions if someone can answer!
1; Sump seal...appears to be 2 of them in a pack...do i put both on?
2; Theres 6 small metal washers which i can see are for the 6 hex nuts, but also 1 larger metal washer..any idea what that's for?
3; Roughly how much oil is needed to fill her up after i drain it all?
Speedy replies would be brill as i'm just about to do it now whilst i still have daylight!

Sump seal.......... 1 each side of the strainer, that is gasket, strainer, gasket and lastly the big plate.
Larger one would be new seal for the sump plug.
'bout 2.5 litres of oil.

Of course, some sump plates don't have a sump plug, so you may not need the larger metal washer - that is what is is for.

Many thanks for the info guys
I actually started before i got replies...and to be honest it was one of those jobs that everything was blatantly obvious as i was taking it all
apart!
There was quite a lot of really thick dregs in that oil! Not sure when it was last changed, but i guess she's going to be much happier now!
Took her round the block...leak free currently, but i'm not going to be totally suprised if there's one or 2 drips in the morning...will be stoked
if she's totally dry (fingers crossed!)
Was quite funny as my wife reassuringly commented that it was "very blokey to be bringing oily engine parts indoors" hahahaha

gotta watch those sump plate studs,
u only have to look at them funny and they strip the thread out of the case

Yeah...
Thankfully i'd read that before somewhere so i tweaked them as tight as i thought i could get away with.
What happens if one strips? Is there a way around it? (for future reference!)

u used to be able to get 6mm/8mm step studs, i havent used any for about 10 years but i assume they're still availble so u just retapped to the next
size up
theres one method i wont recommend.
a few years back i was stripping down a dead block and one of the sump nuts just wouldnt undo, kept spinning in the case
i cut the nut off with the grinder and found some clever idiot had put a bolt down through from inside the case and tried to epoxy it in place....

Popped outside just now and there's oil on the floor (grrrrr!)
Not from the seals i have replaced though....so i am thankful for that!!
Will take a better look in daylight tomorrow, but from a quick inspection i noticed that one of the 4 tubes going from the rocker area (sorry..cant
think of proper name) is black instead of being clean like the rest. Although saying that it doesn't look like fresh oil.
Will inspect properly in the morning...but if the seals on this "tube" need replacing is that a relatively easy job?

pushrod tubes
u can buy replacement a pushrod tubes and seals set
u have to undo the rocker cover, undo the rocker assembly, take out the pushrod (all pretty easy). Because the pushrod tube is clamped between the
head and case, u pretty much have to destroy it to get it and the seal out. i just used a set of vice grips to crush it, then twist it out
to put the new one in, put the seals and tube in place, then tighten the adjusting nut up until its tight between the head and case. then put the
pushrod back in, rocker assembly, readjust the tappets and then the cover on
2hrs work or so

Although it appears there's no fresh drips from the pushrod tubes, it's obviously leaked at some point, so i will do them at some point soon.
Ok, i am down to one oil-drip source now, and it's from what appears to be the underside of the oil breather (?) Basically theres a rubber tube that
goes from the oil filler area and up to the oilbath air filter.....and also a metal pipe that goes from the oil filler area to the underside of the
car, and the drips appear to be coming from there. Is this normal and can i cure it?
