I'm having the problem you had, but since you figured it out can you (or anyone else) help me out? I have the starter and clutch cable off but I'm
not sure what is supposed to happen with the axles. Tried a few things but none worked, obviously.

Ok this might not be the easiest way but this is what I did.
Make sure you have drained the oil and then:
1. Undo bolt at bottom of shock
2. Undo two? bolts holding spring plate to axle tube. You should be able to pull axle tube backwards out off spring plate now
3.Take off the axle nut so you can get the drum off
4. Push out tab holding brake line to axle tube and unbolt brake line from back of drum brake. (I did not need to undo handbrake)
5. Undo the four nuts holding the backing plate to the axle tube and pull backing plate away from tube (Have a rag handy, oil will pour out here)
6. Repeat for opposite side
7. Loosen off two bolts holding in front mount and undo the big bolts holding the rear gearbox cradle in
8. Go in under back seat and unscrew inspection plate
9. Cut tie wire and unscrew the square looking bolt. This should disconnect shift linkage
10. Grab clutch cable with some vise grips and turn wing nut off
11. Dont forget to unplug reverse wire at the front and unbolt ground off gearbox.
12. You should then be able to pull gearbox backwards and then lift it out (weighs 50kg with tubes and axles connected so you might need a jack
depending how strong you are )

add to that d/c clutch cable, starter wiring and reverse light wiring
73 on cars dont need anything undone in the front mount
it comes out with the gearbox
