Look in the tracks for a wear spot in the centre,it may look good but somewhere there will be a groove or a rut on the ball.If the joint clicks it is buggered

A 'knocking' set that I pulled out a few years ago had galling - or pitting - on one face of the inner and outer races of the joints.
It took the advice of some guys at a CV joint place (that for some strange reason couldn't/wouldn't get VW joints in), and basically reversed each shaft so that the inner joint was outer and vice-versa. This meant that when the vehicle was in forward motion the balls were forced against the undamaged faces.
Important things to remember were:
a. Each joint had to be disassembled and cleaned thoroughly.
b. Careful inspection was needed. There may have been a chance that the shafts had already been reversed, which would have been evident if both faces of the ball grooves were worn.
c. Special grease was recommended for reassembly. The CV joint gave me a couple of small tubes of white stuff, but I understand that Molybond is also suitable.
d. It's a good idea to replace the boots with relatively inexpensive new ones. I think that George at CVD has them.
Hope this helps!

... check for wear before you pull them apart. Only ever work on one one at a time. DON'T get the components mixed up as they are matched sets of cages, hubs and balls

Oh, yeah...forgot to mention that!

I did one at a time and used a piece of polystyrene foam with holes dug out of it so that I could keep track of which ball went back into which groove.:tu:

top work! I haven't had any problems with any ball from the one CV going into any hole... just don't mix balls/components form different CVs

I've done heaps of them and have even reused cvs with slight wear marks in them...
I never reuse ones that are pitted [small holes] in them..
in the worn sections...

although back in the 70s I remember hearing a clicking sound in a 1302 Superbug I had..
it had wear marks and maybe pitted??
but I just refilled them with lithium based Moly grease
and never heard another noise....

some of the CVs I cleaned and repacked had larger balls in them... but as far as I know they came off a beetle...
I probably put them back on a beetle axle...

which axle went on what side I don't know...
but I looked at CVs and I don't think having them going in reverse would help much if at all.. IMHO..

PS: I always replace the rubber/PVC boots
as the quality can be really bad... or
the boots are really old and will crack soon after they have been put on....
best to see if they have any cracks, by bending them before putting them on...
engine/gearbox mounts are worse than that as You can't stress them to see if they are going to crack...
