Gearbox Oil
Hi everyone
Just wondering what weight oil is recommended for a swing axle gearbox from a '67 Beetle. I think it's about due for a change.

i just use 80/90 about 2.5 l
and a little more on the swing box if you can get all the old oil out

80w90 is what mostly used,anything lighter is hard on the diff.

Someone told me to put 80/140 gear oil in it.
But I thought that sounded too heavy.

80/140 i think might be Synthetic
and im not sure how it goes in the vw diff might be realy good?
but i know it about 2.5 X the price

Hi Smiley, QPL says it should be changed approx. every 2 (TWO) years -- regardless of actual mileage.
This goes for synthetic as well as mineral, as it is mainly due to additives decomposing with use and exposure to moisture, heat etc.
There is also a max. Mileage at which it should be changed. eg. 15,000 miles for early Beetle to 1500cc. Or whatever the manual says for other
models.
Some A-C VW's we've bought appear to have a mixture of metal particles, water, lumps & rust in what is left of the "oil"... because almost no
one ever changed it!
The usual 80W-90 and 85W-140 are mineral based, and are not "multigrade". They are cheap, so no excuse for not changing them regularly!
The fully synthetic 'equivalents' are 75W-90 and (usually) 75W-140 respectively (and are effectively "multigrade", so they perform better much
when cold).
[These two common visc. grades 90 & 140, were re-defined in 2005-2007...]
QPL recommends 80W-90 or 75W-90 for Beetles. (I suppose the much thicker -140 grades could be used for worn/noisy diffs.)

delivered (free del.) throughout Yarra Valley / Ranges, & Gippsland areas. Also ACE 20, 50 & 90.
